Chapter Seventy-Five: The Mysterious Phone Call
“What did you say? Nothing, nothing!” Ye Qian hurriedly laughed, shooting Dragonfly a glance as she ran to Yang Dannie’s side, grabbing her hand and smiling. “Dannie, why didn’t you sleep in a little longer? Why are you up so early? You don’t have school today—oh, right, you’re not a student anymore, haha! Isn’t it still early for work?”
Ye Qian’s words tumbled out incoherently. Seeing Yang Dannie’s puzzled expression, though she only glanced at Dragonfly without showing much displeasure toward Ye Qian, Ye Qian remembered her own guilt and felt compelled to curry favor.
Fortunately, her efforts paid off a little.
Yang Dannie smiled, “Come on, breakfast is ready. I’ve made some morning dishes.”
“Great, let’s eat!” Dragonfly quickly followed, heading toward the door.
Ye Qian tugged secretly at Dragonfly’s sleeve, blinking at him with a clear signal: stop, there’s something to discuss.
Dragonfly halted, frowning and whispering, “What is it this time?”
Ye Qian eyed him warily. “Don’t you dare tell her anything about what’s between us, understand?!”
Dragonfly chuckled, “What exactly is between us?”
“Our relationship—and, and the thing about me asking you for help with… you know, enhancing my bust. That can’t be mentioned to her!” Ye Qian’s cheeks flushed. Although she’d long admired curvaceous figures, she always acted disdainful toward such women in public. The thought of anyone knowing she’d sought Dragonfly’s help, even agreeing to his massage method for enhancement, mortified her. She’d never be able to show her face again—she’d be laughed at for sure!
Dragonfly seemed to understand now, but certainly had no intention of telling; it would do him no favors, and might even hinder his own romantic pursuits.
“Fine, you can’t say anything either!” Dragonfly winked with a mischievous grin.
“You’re crazy. Do you think I’m as bored as you?” Ye Qian brushed past him and hurried after Yang Dannie, not wanting to arouse any suspicion.
In the kitchen, Yang Dannie had already noticed the strong-smelling herbal medicine simmering in the pot, its aroma wafting through the house. She didn’t ask Dragonfly about it, but during breakfast, kept laughing to herself. Her laughter made Dragonfly join in, and his laughter in turn made Ye Qian feel even more awkward. She suspected they were laughing at her, as if Yang Dannie already knew her secret. To cover her nervousness and unease, Ye Qian chatted with Yang Dannie, barely eating but talking nonstop, her words often contradictory and disjointed.
The more Ye Qian acted this way, the happier Yang Dannie seemed—a typical woman’s playful nature. Occasionally, she’d cast Dragonfly a coquettish glance, making him wonder if she was upset about not sharing a bed with him last night.
In the midst of their awkward breakfast, Yang Dannie’s phone rang. Her face, previously alight with laughter, changed instantly when she saw the caller ID, and she hurried to the balcony.
“What’s wrong with her?” Ye Qian finally breathed a sigh of relief, secretly grateful to whoever had called, and asked Dragonfly.
“How should I know?” Dragonfly took a big bite of his egg sandwich, then drained his milk in one gulp.
Ye Qian gave him a sly look. “Did you notice how her expression changed?”
Dragonfly was momentarily surprised—this woman had sharp eyes. “What’s your point? What does that prove?”
“I haven’t known her long, but it’s obvious she’s a calm type. She wouldn’t change her expression without cause.” Ye Qian frowned, analyzing like a psychology expert.
Dragonfly still didn’t get it. “So what are you trying to say?”
Ye Qian’s face brightened. “From my years of experience, the person who just called her must be someone special, and since she took the call away from us, I’d guess—hehe, hehe…”
“What’s with your giggling? You think you’re some sort of oracle? Half-knowing in heaven, all-knowing on earth?” Dragonfly scoffed.
“Hmph, I know you’re uneasy, but you can’t change the facts. I bet the caller was a man, and a man who’s very fond of her!” Ye Qian smiled gleefully, ready to see Dragonfly embarrassed.
But Dragonfly’s reaction disappointed her; his face stayed calm as he smiled, “Really? Well, let’s see soon enough. If you’re right, I’ll let you decide my fate, how about that?”
“Deal! I’ll just shamelessly ask her, and you can watch her reaction. But I know she’ll probably think up an excuse. Watch her eyes: if she looks left, she’s telling the truth; if right, she’s lying!” Ye Qian spoke with the confidence of a winner.
She had reason to be pleased. In her view, someone courting Yang Dannie was ideal; if Dannie strayed, Ye Qian could easily drive her out of the love triangle between herself and Dragonfly. One less rival is always a good thing.
Yang Dannie returned from the balcony, her face conflicted, worriedly glancing at Dragonfly. Ye Qian, watching her closely, felt even more convinced.
Before Ye Qian could ask, Yang Dannie spoke: “It was my brother.”
Ye Qian froze. Her brother? So her guess was totally wrong?
She blushed, glancing at Dragonfly, who looked calm and amused, blinking at her as if to say: You lost, egghead!
Ye Qian stuck out her tongue at him, then eagerly listened to their conversation. She understood that the “brother” Dannie mentioned was most likely Yang Batian from “Northern Sheep, Southern Tiger”—a legendary figure. Imagining meeting such a person excited her.
Dragonfly asked mildly, “Oh? What did he say?”
Yang Dannie, relieved by Dragonfly’s calmness, sat down. “He’s planning to come to Tianhai soon.”
“For our issue?” Dragonfly frowned.
Yang Dannie nodded carefully. “I didn’t expect their information network to be so efficient!”
“Indeed, what must come will come. Let him come. If nothing else, we’ll meet force with force. Your brother can’t beat me anyway, so what’s he going to do? As long as your old man doesn’t come, I’m not afraid!” Dragonfly suddenly laughed.
Yang Dannie didn’t laugh, but nodded solemnly. “No matter what, I’ll stand firmly by your side.”
“I know.” Dragonfly nodded, feeling a slight stir of emotion. His moment of softness had brought him face-to-face with the Yang family patriarch earlier than expected, but it was inevitable.
Yang Dannie’s understanding of love was profound. She believed that being together wasn’t about having a purpose—the future was unknown, so she never demanded Dragonfly take responsibility for her. She preferred to love quietly, believing that one day Dragonfly would be moved and understand her. But she was also prepared: if he didn’t understand today, she would wait a day; if he didn’t understand in a year, she would wait a year; if he never understood in this life, she’d wait until the next. If in the next life he still didn’t understand, she’d accompany him through life and death, through six cycles of reincarnation.
