Han Longfei smiled a little, feeling somewhat depressed, and withdrew his hand. Li Yan had just exchanged a few words with Ye Qian when a middle-aged couple hurried over to greet them at the entrance. “Oh, isn’t this little Qian? You and Li Yan are so close; you should have come earlier. By the way, how are your parents? I haven’t visited them in a long time.”

“Oh, thank you for your concern. And this is—” Li Zhengdong, clearly experienced, didn’t finish his sentence.

Thankfully so, for Ye Qian's expression changed slightly and she quickly explained, “Oh, this is my driver and bodyguard!”

“All right, all right, let’s get Qian inside. The banquet is about to begin!” Li Zhengdong’s wife, Liu Shubi, smiled and urged them in, resolving the awkwardness of the moment.

“Yes, yes, I’m just so busy I lost my head. Yan, take Qian inside quickly, the banquet is starting soon!” Li Zhengdong laughed.

Ye Qian nodded, linking arms with Li Yan. They had only taken a few steps when Ye Qian noticed Longfei hadn’t followed. She frowned, “Longfei, why aren’t you coming in?”

“I’m just a bodyguard, what would I do inside? I’ll stay out here and make sure your car is safe.” Longfei chuckled, knowing Ye Qian was likely concocting another scheme to deal with him. If he went in too easily, wouldn’t that make him look foolish?

Longfei’s plan was sound, but Ye Qian wouldn’t let him have his way. She insisted that Longfei come inside; he kept refusing. Li Yan, standing nearby, blinked mischievously and teased, “Longfei, Ye Qian is so beautiful—don’t you want to be her escort tonight? There’ll be a dance later!”

Longfei quickly shook his head, “No, not at all—I wouldn’t dare!”

“Longfei, are you coming or not?” Ye Qian walked up to Longfei, threatening him in a low voice through gritted teeth, subtly waving her manicured nails. The movement was small, unnoticed by others.

“I’m so scared!” Longfei knew the act was almost done. He put on a timid face and said, “Fine, since you won’t have a partner tonight, I’ll sacrifice myself and keep you company. But I won’t dance—don’t ask me to be your dance partner later!”

Having spoken, Longfei took the lead and strode inside, leaving Ye Qian and Li Yan’s family at the door.

Longfei hardly looked the part of a bodyguard anymore!

Because of his profession, Longfei had assumed many identities before—he had attended such banquets, even participated in royal gatherings in England. Upon entering the hall, a familiar feeling swept over him.

Whether at home or abroad, such banquets were a staple of high society. Under the pretext of birthdays, influential figures from all walks of life were invited to gather, expanding their social networks and elevating their status. Thus, the elite relished these events, and they gradually became an unwritten rule.

Celebrities, socialites, and government officials alike sought such opportunities to forge connections and build their networks. Deals that couldn’t be made openly were often concluded here—one word, one promise, one drink, one dance, and transactions otherwise impossible became reality.

Longfei entered the hall and quickly found a quiet corner to sit in. This was his instinct and habit: to observe first from the sidelines. He smiled, surprised to see her in such a place.

Yang Danni—anchor of the Shanghai News & Entertainment Channel—was beautiful, poised, dignified, and fresh-faced. Every evening at seven, countless viewers tuned in to see her, and the ratings for her news program were record-breaking, surpassing other entertainment shows—a rare feat in the television world.

Many businessmen, entrepreneurs, and young heirs had waited at the Shanghai TV center, hoping to dine with her, offering luxury cars, mansions, and cash. Even the hottest celebrities could be wooed, but none succeeded with her, earning her a stellar reputation.

At twenty-four, a beautiful woman who remained unmarried and free of even rumors—despite her privileged family background—was a mystery. Some speculated she was a lesbian, others thought she’d secretly married abroad. Yang Danni only smiled serenely at such rumors. Perhaps no one knew her heart had long been claimed by a man. She said she belonged to him for life, regardless of status or title.

People often can’t distinguish between perseverance and obsession. Everyone harbors a rebellious streak, and outside advice sometimes only spurs them on. Whether persevering or obsessed, she wouldn’t turn back until she hit a wall—or even then, she might not stop.

Such was her strength and stubbornness as a woman. Yet in some ways, she was extraordinarily gentle and docile, though few ever saw that side of her.

Tonight, Yang Danni wore an evening gown, shedding her usual suit and shirt. The dress’s pale blue fabric was lifted high by her unbound bust, causing Longfei’s imagination to wander.

Her hair was elegantly styled. Although Yang Danni didn’t want to attend such a banquet, she never disobeyed her father’s instructions from distant Beijing, so she came. She forced herself to be graceful and polite, chatting with a few young men from prominent families, though her gaze flickered restlessly.

Suddenly, Yang Danni’s eyes lit up, her wine glass nearly slipping from her grasp. The gentleman beside her, dressed with scholarly elegance, was speaking, but she heard none of it, drifting as if in a dream. After a brief daze, she headed toward a corner, ignoring the puzzled looks of the men around her.

Longfei patted the seat beside him, and Yang Danni obediently sat down, astonishing the men who had just been chatting with her. One of them muttered bitterly, “Who is that man? What is he to Danni? How can this be? How can this be?”

The others were equally perplexed, wanting to follow, but the banquet began—Li Zhengdong started his speech, forcing them to stay put, though their eyes never left Yang Danni.

Ye Qian sat in another corner, frowning, feeling a headache. Who was Longfei, really? How did he know Yang Danni? Women’s intuition told her Yang Danni might have deeper feelings for Longfei, but it made no sense. Could Longfei be Yang Danni’s mysterious boyfriend?

Impossible, absolutely impossible! Ye Qian shook her head, dismissing her own suspicion, but her gaze at Longfei grew ever more puzzled.

“How long has it been since we last met? Do you remember?” Yang Danni’s eyes were moist, but she controlled herself and didn’t let the tears fall. Her voice was gentle, trembling as she spoke.

Longfei paused, looking apologetically at her. “I’m sorry. You know I’ve always been busy.”

“I know you wouldn’t remember, but I remember clearly. It’s been one year, three months, and twenty-one days since we last met. You said you’d come see me—why haven’t you? I wait for you every day.” Yang Danni took a deep breath; she wouldn’t cry. At age five, her father took her to the Monument to the People’s Heroes in Beijing and stood there for half an hour, finally saying, “No one in the Yang family is allowed to cry.”
