“Chen Zhiqiang, hello! Meeting you again, what a coincidence—no, wait, it’s really not a coincidence,” Liu Yunfei continued smiling as he extended his hand to the young man.

“Ah, you two know each other?” The young woman looked at them with surprise, a sudden flicker of excitement stirring in her heart. If she could lure this handsome guy into her grasp, she thought, recalling some Japanese films with two men and one woman…

It was clear that Chen Zhiqiang was inexperienced when it came to seducing other people’s wives; he didn’t dare shake Liu Yunfei’s hand and instead, rather awkwardly, said to the young woman, “Madam boss, let’s go.”

“Not only do you lack experience in infidelity, but it seems you’re quite naive about the world too. Chen Zhiqiang, you just revealed her identity with one sentence. Madam boss, you’re quite bold to be hitting on her,” Liu Yunfei withdrew his outstretched hand.

This time, Madam boss caught the unfriendly tone in Liu Yunfei’s voice and released Chen Zhiqiang, stepping forward a couple of paces. No matter what, she had to defend this useless pretty boy a little: “Little brother, get your facts straight. I’m the one who’s got him wrapped around my finger. Looks like you’re just another pretty boy yourself. That high-end car of yours was probably a gift from a wealthy woman, right? How much do you think it costs per month? Sister can support you too.”

“Afraid you can’t afford it,” Liu Yunfei teased, his eyes sharp as he glanced at Chen Zhiqiang beside him.

“How much do you say it costs per month? Name your price.” Actually, Madam boss wasn’t serious about supporting Liu Yunfei; she just wanted to humiliate him.

“Then how much are you paying to support this pretty boy?” Liu Yunfei leaned against the car, arms crossed.

The woman, far more experienced in worldly matters, wasn’t foolish enough to tell Liu Yunfei. Instead, she gave a crooked, disdainful smile: “Go ask him yourself. Don’t try that on me, you’re still a bit green.”

“Oh? What game? The one you play with Chen Zhiqiang? Pretty fun, right? I just got a new phone with an 8-megapixel camera today. Want me to permanently save the footage of your little game?” Liu Yunfei said, reaching into his pocket.

Unable to win the banter, Madam boss immediately put on her fierce act, one hand on her hip, the other pointing at Liu Yunfei: “What game? You better explain yourself clearly! You think I’m some greenhorn to play with? You’re still wet behind the ears. I’ve got no time to play with you!”

Though Chen Zhiqiang lacked confidence, he still had a sense of shame and fear. Seeing a small crowd gathering, he hurriedly dragged the scolding Madam boss away. Turning back, he saw Liu Yunfei smiling, winking one eye, and making a finger-gun gesture at him.

When Commissioner Zhao saw Liu Yunfei’s Porsche, he became even more convinced of his suspicions. Taking the paperwork, he expedited the process—sure enough, the head of the vehicle management office personally handled it, making everything more efficient. Within half an hour, after photos and stamping, a brand-new license plate was hung on the rear of the car.

“A6688—not bad, a lucky number.”

“Commissioner Zhao, how much did you pay for this special plate? We don’t have that kind of money,” Liu Yunfei said politely, though he knew Zhao wouldn’t return the plate.

“Talking about money is not what friends do. Friends don’t talk money. If you don’t mind, just call me big brother. If it weren’t for the all-8s plate being given to the city party secretary’s son, it would have been yours. Next month, I’m transferring to be the captain of the city traffic police team. From then on, just come to find your big brother,” Commissioner Zhao said, disregarding formalities to treat Liu Yunfei like a peer, even though they were about the same age.

“Thanks. If you need anything, just call me,” Liu Yunfei said, though he wasn’t sure he could help Zhao with much. If it were about lending money, he certainly wouldn’t; but he might help negotiate for two people.

Looking at his phone, it was getting late. He suddenly thought he should buy a luxury watch when he had time. Nowadays, those wealthy types all wore watches to show their status. The boss’s size was often measured by the watch on his wrist.

Though he’d driven a Ferrari before, this was his first car purchase. In a great mood after running into Chen Zhiqiang, Liu Yunfei pressed the accelerator with his foot and sped along the broad main road of Huangjiang, arriving soon at Huangjiang Experimental Middle School.

Convertibles were still rare in Huangjiang. The security guard managing the student parking lot immediately recognized a big spender arriving. Students, too, remembered Liu Yunfei from yesterday—the new celebrity of the school. Teachers and students alike had been talking about him all day: the furious phone fight, the battle with the bearded soldiers, the donation of notebooks. The guard was thrilled at the gossip and eagerly approached, bowing and scraping.

Liu Yunfei knew the so-called security guard was “security but not peace” because he wasn’t diligent. Pressing a button, the convertible roof closed automatically. Liu Yunfei pulled out a hard-pack of Zhonghua cigarettes from under his seat and tossed it to the guard. “Guys, keep an eye on my car. When you finish these, come see me for more.”

The guard took the cigarettes, grinning from ear to ear. His monthly salary barely bought two packs of these. Even with three guards sharing, they hadn’t heard of anyone being so generous: “If they run out, we come get more. That’s the life.” From that day forward, the three guards became Liu Yunfei’s personal car watchers, setting up a stool beside the Porsche.

“Don’t touch it. If some unlucky kid scratches the paint, can you afford it?”

“Hey, no photos, I’m talking to you.”

“Hey, what’s going on here? Oh, it’s Brother Liu. You’re driving yourself?”

The guards were all talk, bullying the weak and fearing the strong.

Liu Yunfei carried his casual bag, striding along, checking the time. It was already the second class of the morning, probably just after the bell. Passing by, some teachers were not yet at their classrooms.

“Hey, student, which way is Senior Three Class Three?” A clear, steady female voice entered Liu Yunfei’s ears. It sounded familiar. He turned to see a slim, bookish girl with soft long hair and rimless glasses.

Seeing it was Liu Yunfei, the girl’s face brightened with joy, her eyebrows rising slightly. “Hello, it’s you! What a coincidence.”

“Hey,” Liu Yunfei thought, Why are you so happy to see me? With your father, I wouldn’t dare provoke you. Now I’m part of the car crowd, but I can’t handle your father’s heavy hand. But why is this woman asking for our class? She looks too young to be a teacher, and not quite a student either. What could she want with our class?

“Last time you asked for directions. This time, you’re asking again. Senior Three Class Three.” The girl repeated, seeing Liu Yunfei staring blankly at her.

“Oh, upstairs,” Liu Yunfei led the way.

“Again upstairs? Don’t you have anything else to say? You should practice your verbal skills more. The former American president Lincoln was shy as a child. To practice speaking, he once walked 30 miles to a courthouse to listen to lawyers debate… and in Japan…” The girl followed behind, talking without pause.

“Alright, alright, I get it. You’re a teacher, right?” Liu Yunfei now understood her identity. No teacher would be so tireless otherwise.

“Yes, I’m the new substitute teacher for Senior Three Class Three. My name is Gao Yueqiu.” The girl extended her hand, small and delicate, white and soft, evoking a sense of gentleness.

Feeling reluctant to shake but unwilling to refuse, Liu Yunfei gently took the soft hand. He quietly wished China had the custom of kissing hands, or better yet, the Arab cheek-touch greeting. “Hello, teacher. I’m Liu Yunfei. Yueqiu is a beautiful name—poetic, elegant, fitting you well. Wait, don’t you have the surname Liu?”

Gao Yueqiu was puzzled. Why should she share his surname? “Why do I have to be Liu?”

“Oh, sorry, I thought you were the daughter of the discipline director. Haha. Come on, I’m in Senior Three Class Three.” Liu Yunfei turned and walked ahead.

Gao Yueqiu felt a bit frustrated. Hearing Liu Yunfei’s name before, and now learning he was in her class, her heart skipped a beat. She had heard that the previous English teacher quit because of this kid, unwilling to return to the class. She hadn’t expected it to be him.

Still, she was somewhat grateful. Yesterday, she had offered herself to the school’s discipline director for a job, only to be rejected outright. At home, she kept thinking about how difficult it was to find work without connections or backing, just as her parents had warned. She had been defiant, determined to find a job in her hometown, but feared she might fail.

Unexpectedly, that very afternoon, Director Liu called her, inviting her to substitute teach, his tone unusually warm. She suspected her parents might have used their old contacts to help.

Arriving early at the school, listening to the teachers’ scattered remarks, she gradually realized that being a substitute teacher was no easy task—especially for this class, where Liu Yunfei was the cause of the previous teacher’s resignation due to his big beard. It was thanks to him that she got the job, and though she was grateful, she also feared him.

Sitting at the temporary desk, she wondered about the seemingly all-powerful Liu Yunfei—what kind of tricks did he have? If he played a prank on her first day, what would she do? This was her first real time stepping onto the podium, and already she faced such a troublesome student. But after meeting him, she thought he wasn’t all bad, just a bit hot-tempered.
