Chapter 144: The Situation Is Urgent

The partially opened canopy cast a grayish-white light upon the tightly drawn curtains. In the faint dawn, Zheng Yi slipped into a deep sleep. Beneath the thin quilt, her languid, delicate figure lay in repose, tender and endearing like a sleeping child.
Attentive Kang Ning gently tucked the quilt around Zheng Yi. She opened her dreamy, beautiful eyes and locked gazes warmly with him. Her alluring lips pressed softly and frequently against Kang Ning’s strong, determined mouth and well-built body.
Just as the two were fully immersed in their intimate dance of body and soul, the persistent ringing of Zheng Yi’s phone in her bag interrupted them.
Reluctantly, Kang Ning slipped off the bed, retrieved the phone, and handed it to Zheng Yi. He knew that the caller could only be her family or Fang Xiong, so without a word, he leaned tenderly against her tender chest, sensing the rhythm and mood of her heartbeat. Silently, his waist shifted toward her smooth, flat abdomen, while his powerful lips occasionally sucked at the delicate peaks of her breasts.
Under Kang Ning’s uninhibited, robust embrace and passionate caress, the overwhelming sensations flushed her cheeks crimson, teetering between bliss and agony. Her whole body trembled like ripples stirred by the wind on a lake’s surface. Her hand clutching the phone shook uncontrollably.
Mumbling faintly, she ended the call. With a determined sound, Zheng Yi flipped Kang Ning over and, like a noble female knight, mounted his athletic body, galloping with abandon. She poured out all her feelings—pure or fallen, restrained or free—and reveled in the thrilling surge of revenge and release. She savored Kang Ning’s meticulous love and care, as well as the unforgettable fullness and fulfillment he brought her.
Kang Ning awoke to see Mengmeng lying atop him, her large, glistening eyes looking at him intently. The air still carried Zheng Yi’s faint but familiar scent.
Gently covering Mengmeng’s eyes, Kang Ning pressed her face to his chest, quietly listening to their heartbeats and cherishing the rare moment of tranquility and warmth.
“Brother Ning, Sister Yi left at dawn. She told me on the phone she didn’t want to wake you, so I rushed here. I know she’s afraid that if she sees your eyes, she’ll cry out loud. Brother Ning, can you stay with me for just one more day? Just one day. I want to have you all to myself for a day, just one day...” Mengmeng murmured as if speaking to herself.
“All right, I’ll stay today...” Kang Ning sighed heavily, stroking her back with sadness. “Actually, I was awake when Yi left, but I didn’t dare face such a farewell. I just quietly closed my eyes and listened to her footsteps fading away. Mengmeng, I’m sorry...”
“Don’t say anything! You should sleep a little more. I’m going back to hand that Passat over to my brother. Sister Jing gave it to me when she left, but I don’t want to see that car—it makes me sad whenever I look at it...” Mengmeng said, softly kissing Kang Ning’s face before leaving the room, leaving Kang Ning staring blankly at the white ceiling with an empty heart.

Shortly after Mengmeng left, Kang Ning finished washing up and left the guest room. He took a taxi to Chunxi Road, bought two sets of autumn clothes, and returned to the Jinjiang Hotel.
Carrying the shopping bags, Kang Ning entered the hotel. About fifty meters from the lobby, he suddenly saw the familiar Passat parked at the entrance.
Mengmeng got out of the car and shut the door. She seemed to be speaking briefly with her brother before turning and entering the lobby. The Passat then drove away.
Kang Ning quickened his pace to catch up with Mengmeng but was unexpectedly halted by the sight of a suspicious van approaching rapidly. It stopped right where the Passat had been. A man and a woman got out and followed Mengmeng into the lobby.
Though at a distance, Kang Ning clearly recognized the two followers. The woman’s face seemed vaguely familiar—she resembled the beautiful female traffic officer who had let him go that day.
The van’s driver parked the vehicle along the corridor about ten meters ahead. When the security guard approached to intervene, the driver showed identification and whispered something, prompting the guard to nod repeatedly with a serious expression.
Kang Ning realized the situation was dire. Without revealing any emotion, he turned and left the hotel, inwardly relieved. Being meticulously neat, he had already tidied the room thoroughly and instructed the staff to clean the bathroom and change the pillowcases before leaving. He had not left his small bag in the room, avoiding bringing trouble to Mengmeng.
He hurried to a public phone booth about a hundred meters to the left, quickly took out a magnetic card phone, and swiftly dialed Mengmeng’s number. “Listen carefully, Mengmeng, don’t speak! You’re being followed. If the police ask you later, just say you haven’t seen me for a long time and only chatted with Sister Yi all night. Say nothing else. I’ll immediately inform Yi. Remember, after I hang up, don’t look back or at anyone near you. Pretend nothing happened and go straight back to your room. Understand? If you do, just say ‘uh-huh’!”
“Uh-huh!” came the faint reply.
Kang Ning hung up and exhaled deeply. As he left the phone booth, he hurriedly took out his phone to notify Zheng Yi. Having just returned home, Zheng Yi promptly called Mengmeng to help her out of the predicament, following Kang Ning’s instructions.
Fifteen minutes later, Zheng Yi called Kang Ning back. The police had searched the room thoroughly but found nothing. After questioning Mengmeng briefly, who handled it well, the police even called Zheng Yi to verify the matter.
Zheng Yi repeatedly urged Kang Ning to stay safe over the phone before reluctantly hanging up.
Kang Ning returned to the underground parking lot of the commercial plaza, climbed into his SUV, changed into a camouflage uniform with shoulder boards, put on a training cap, and immediately drove toward the Jinjiang Hotel.
As he neared the hotel, he saw the police van still stationary. Kang Ning guessed these people were relentlessly monitoring Mengmeng. Helpless, he had no choice but to drive away.

Arriving in the eastern suburbs, Kang Ning parked beside a shabby phone booth and took out the magnetic card phone to call Mengmeng again on her seldom-used phone. “Mengmeng, where are you?”
“I’m in the elevator. Where are you? I was so worried...” Mengmeng’s voice trembled with anxiety.
“Is anyone else in the elevator?” Kang Ning asked quietly.
“Yes, an old lady and a little boy,” Mengmeng whispered back.
Kang Ning raised his voice to warn, “Mengmeng, there are people waiting outside the hotel, following you. Looks like we can’t meet today. Don’t worry, no matter how many days it takes, I will definitely see you before I leave! Listen carefully: after you check out and leave the lobby, go straight to your parents’ home or to work, follow your usual routine, and absolutely don’t contact me by phone. You’ll have to endure for a few days. Once they find nothing, they’ll withdraw. I will come for you then.”
“Okay, I’ll listen to you. Take care!” she replied.
Ending the call, Kang Ning breathed a sigh of relief.
After getting into his car and closing the door, he was once again lost in thought. Where was he headed? Where could he go?
He circled around Chengdu again and again, the setting sun sinking low, yet he remained uncertain.
Return to Leijiang?
The gun theft and shooting cases were throwing Leijiang into chaos—it was too dangerous to go back now.
Leave Chengdu?
Wouldn’t that break his promise to Mengmeng? He already felt he had wronged the beautiful, devoted Mengmeng enough. Leaving like this would only deepen her sorrow.
For a time, Kang Ning’s heart was a tangled storm of confusion and turmoil.
