Chapter Thirteen: The Chief of the Gray Wolves

Fierce Grey Wolves

...
There was no detailed information available, only that these wolves moved in packs and were currently blocking my only path forward. Beyond them likely lay the mysterious Grey Wolf Leader!
My hand holding the sword trembled slightly...
Each group of these wolves consisted of at least four. With my current attack power, it would take me about 15 to 20 strikes—roughly 30 seconds—to kill a single level 11 wolf. That means, with four wolves, each one would get about 20 hits on me. Four wolves, 80 attacks in total, and each attack would cost me around 15 HP. I’d lose about 1200 HP altogether. Do I have 1200 HP?
No! The answer is a definite no…
Even if I added the 90 HP from a bottle of Ketchup over 30 seconds, I’d still only have 500 HP to withstand their attacks. If I tried to force my way through, I’d be dead for sure. Is this really a quest a newbie is supposed to complete? Or am I supposed to wait until I get a job change and bring along a whole crowd for backup?
Suddenly, I recalled the trick I used earlier on level 9 monsters—using obstacles to dodge the wolves’ bites. Could that work here?
No sooner thought than done, I approached and lured four Grey Wolves, but to my surprise, the entire pack seemed to act with uncanny intelligence, swarming at me all at once. Instead of four, I had a flood of wolves coming at me, with more pouring in from behind.
This won’t do! At this rate, I’ll definitely lose a level. Even if I tried to escape now, I’d still get torn to pieces—there are just too many wolves! And as luck would have it, two more had spawned on the path back!
Which twisted programmer came up with this layout? Are they trying to drive people mad?
All my carefully laid plans instantly vanished. While enduring the wolves’ attacks from behind, I frantically dashed toward a nearby cluster of rocks. Could I climb up?
Impossible! It had just rained, the rocks were slick as ice, and there was nowhere to get a grip!
What now? What do I do?
Wait—a crack between the rocks! Maybe I can squeeze in!
It seemed to be a bug. Once I wedged myself into the crevice, only one wolf could reach me at a time, which gave me a sliver of hope. If this really was a bug, then the earlier inability to pull just four wolves must have been the work of some mischievous designer.

After downing a bottle of Ketchup, I drew my sword and started hacking at the wolf that got close. To my relief, it could only chip away 5 HP at a time, and its attacks were much less frequent due to the cramped space. Meanwhile, I could swing freely, slashing down with all my might from the side.
In this way, even without potions, I could steadily cut down these high-experience wolves, and didn’t even need to waste time searching for prey.
Unknowingly, four hours slipped by. Checking the time, it was already six o’clock—just one more hour until dinner. My stomach had long since begun grumbling, but given the circumstances, I dared not imagine what would happen if I logged off now. Snow Han had told me she’d reached level 8 and miraculously made it into the nation’s top 100,000...
Xin Yu had logged off to sleep, while Xu Lin and the others were still online. Xu Lin was now level 7—not as high as Snow Han, but not bad for a girl in a game.
Outside the rocks, the wolf pack had finally dispersed, leaving only a few stragglers wandering about. By my rough count, I’d taken down nearly 300 wolves in those four hours, yet only scored one green item, three white items, and a few red potions. No wonder people cry and plead to spend real money on gear—the drop rate is enough to make anyone weep, and the experience required to level up is outrageous. Even after 300 wolves, I hadn’t managed to climb from level 9 to 10. The rumors were true—levels ending in 9 are notoriously difficult to break through, with staggering experience requirements. You can reach level 99, but level 100 is basically a myth...
After finishing off the last few wolves, I breathed a long sigh of relief and stepped out of the rocky crevice. The sky above was stunningly clear.
Three hundred wolves hadn’t given me much in the way of equipment, but the coins weren’t bad—almost two gold, by my calculations.
I took out the green item for a closer look—it was a bow:
[Wolf Tail Longbow] (Green Equipment)
Attack: 18-32
Stamina: +6
Agility: +4
Required Level: 10
...
After inspecting it thoroughly, I realized my Beast Sword, which I’d thought was top-tier, was nothing compared to this bow. Not only did it have far higher attack, but the bonus stats were leagues ahead as well.
Wait, which one of us was training as an archer?
I checked my friends list. It was “Vegetable Temptation”—Xin Yu!
Should I give her this exceptional bow? I could already imagine her purring sweetly and saying how nice I was to her. Worse yet, she might even joke about marrying me in gratitude...
A cold bead of sweat slid down my nose. The brave warrior who’d just faced a pack of wolves now felt a flicker of fear!

“Awooo~”
A wolf’s howl jolted me back to my original purpose—the Grey Wolf Leader!
As I’d guessed, when I rounded a cluster of rocks, there he was: the majestic Grey Wolf Leader sitting atop a blue boulder. Amusingly, all his subordinates were lying quietly below, having already turned into experience points.
Grey Wolf Leader
Level: 13 (Boss)
Attack: ???
Defense: ???
...
Time was running out—if the mobs respawned, I’d be finished!
I rushed forward and slashed at the Grey Wolf Leader’s neck.
“56!”
Not a bad damage number at all! For a level 13 boss, that was fairly respectable, though against the Grey Wolf Leader it was like scratching an itch—his health bar didn’t even budge!
Wham!
A savage claw struck me, costing me 25 HP. Even with 43 defense, I still lost that much. This so-called boss wasn’t famous for nothing...
Several more strikes finally made the Grey Wolf Leader wince. As he opened his bloodstained maw in fury, I seized the chance to toss in a pack of “Ah Hua’s Ketchup.”
System notification: “Grey Wolf Leader” has consumed “Ah Hua’s Ketchup.” Unable to regenerate HP for 10 minutes.
Wasn’t it supposed to be 30 minutes? Why only ten? Maybe because he’s a boss?
No matter—keep slashing!
