I gripped my phone tightly and responded calmly, “Boss Gao, you really startled me. But do you honestly think I would hand over that jade without any preparation?”

Gao Youde’s voice carried a hint of surprise. “What do you mean?”

I sneered coldly, “There’s something hidden inside that jade. Take a closer look. Maybe you’ll find something you’d rather not see.”

There was a pause on the other end, then Gao Youde’s angry voice blurted out, “There’s nothing there! Are you fucking with me?!”

Unfazed, I continued evenly, “Boss Gao, some good things in this world are invisible to fools.”

His tone deepened, “What exactly do you want?”

I glanced at Old Madam Hu lying on the hospital bed, my gaze steady. “I lost my family early, so I despise people who threaten others using their loved ones’ lives. Don’t bother asking for my forgiveness, Gao Youde. I won’t forgive you. Goodbye.”

Silence lingered for a few seconds before a cold snort came through. “Fine, Wang Hu, you’re ruthless. We’ll see about that.”

I smiled lightly. “Alright then. Hopefully, you’ll have the courage to come look for me.”

After hanging up, my expression was serene.

Old Chen Bao leaned in and whispered, “Brother Hu, what’s going on?”

I gave a faint smile. “Nothing. Just an old dog barking a few times.”

Chen Bao and I spent half the day arranging everything at the hospital. Finally, Old Madam Hu woke up. Her eyes fluttered open, and when she saw me by her bedside, a flicker of emotion and confusion crossed her gaze.

“Huzi, why are you here?” Her voice was weak, but still filled with concern.

I smiled and took her hand gently. “Grandma Hu, don’t worry. I’m here to take care of you.”

She looked around as if searching for someone, then asked, “Where’s Hu San? Where did he go?”

My heart tightened; I knew this question would come sooner or later, but I had to remain composed.

I gave Chen Bao a subtle look. He immediately understood, quietly stepping out and closing the door behind him.

“Grandma Hu, Hu San found a job and can’t come right now. I’m here to take care of you. Please rest assured.”

I did my best to keep my voice steady, with a hint of reassurance.

Old Madam Hu’s expression softened slightly, though worry still flickered in her eyes. “Huzi, you young people mustn’t let me hold you back. That boy Hu San… sigh, he’s always causing trouble. My heart’s never at ease.”

I gently patted the back of her hand and said firmly, “Grandma Hu, don’t worry. Hu San is doing well now. He knows you’re in the hospital, so he asked me to look after you. He doesn’t want you to worry.”

She nodded, tears glistening at the corners of her eyes. “You’re all good children. You’ve been through so much.”

I shook my head, a warm smile spreading across my face. “Grandma Hu, you don’t have to say that. You’ve always treated us well. Now that you need us, of course we’ll do our best.”

Just then, a soft knock came from outside the door. Chen Bao peeked in, his expression serious. “Brother Hu, there’s something going on outside. You should come take a look.”

I frowned slightly and said to Old Madam Hu, “Grandma Hu, rest a bit. I’ll be right back.”

She nodded and closed her eyes, looking weary.

I tucked her in carefully and stepped out.

Chen Bao waited in the corridor, his face tense. “Brother Hu, a few strangers were wandering near the hospital. They look like those guys from the market.”

I chuckled, “No worries. We’ll deal with them when they come knocking.”

Chen Bao frowned, clearly uneasy. “Brother Hu, we should get some brothers here. If something happens, you can’t handle it alone.”

I smiled and waved him off. “Not calling anyone. No need.”

Chen Bao stared at me in shock, eyes full of doubt. “Brother Hu, are you really that good at fighting?”

I lifted my shirt a little, revealing faint abs, and grinned. “Not yet. Still training. If they hit hard, I might only take three punches.”

Chen Bao burst out laughing, then grew serious again. “Brother Hu, we can’t be careless. These aren’t good people. If they attack, we’re in trouble.”

I patted his shoulder reassuringly. “Old Bao, don’t worry. I know what I’m doing. They just want to scare us. If they really make a move, they’ll think twice.”

“But—”

“No ‘but.’ This is a hospital. If something goes wrong, we can get help right away. Didn’t you say you know someone here?”

Chen Bao was nearly dumbfounded by my reasoning.

He fell silent for a moment, then gave me a thumbs-up. “There aren’t many people I respect in this life, but you’re one of them.”

Just then, several figures appeared at the end of the corridor — those very men.

They saw us and strode directly over.

One of them was the younger brother of the leader from the market.

I stepped forward, still smiling faintly. “Gentlemen, what brings you here?”

The bald man at the front gave me a cold glance, his tone unfriendly. “Wang Hu, right? Boss Gao sent us to talk.”

I nodded. “Oh? About what?”

The bald man sneered. “Boss Gao says this is your last chance. Hand over the money, and it has to be double. That so-called Tianjie Jade of yours is just a meteorite, yet you claim it’s the real thing! You’d better pay up, or you and everyone around you won’t have a good time.”

I kept my smile but my voice turned icy. “Boss Gao holds me in high regard. But I’m taking care of a patient right now and don’t have that kind of cash on hand. Maybe you should check with him again?”

“If Boss Gao insists, I’ll arrange to fetch the money!”

The bald man was clearly angered by my attitude, glaring fiercely. “Wang Hu, don’t take us for fools! We’re not here to listen to your nonsense!”

I remained unruffled, clapping my hands lightly. “Don’t be so hasty. We all have to make a living; no need to be reckless. Tell Boss Gao over the phone that I’ll give him ten million more—but he has to come himself.”

The bald man’s face darkened. “You bastard, you tricked us once already, now you’re trying it again? Do you think I’m stupid?”

I looked at him calmly. “You said no nonsense. Just call him, then tell him my terms.”

He sneered and said, “Fine, wait and see!”

Without another word, he pulled out his phone and dialed. But after just a few words, his expression changed drastically. He cursed loudly, “Fuck this! Let’s get out of here!”
