Chapter 35: A Step Too Late
Su Wan turned her face away, refusing to acknowledge him.
Mu Yunshen grew a little anxious and said, “I know you’re angry at me, but you can’t just ignore your own health, can you?”
Su Wan still didn’t reply.
Mu Yunshen walked to the other side of the bed, but no matter where he moved, Su Wan wouldn’t look at him.
In the end, Mu Yunshen simply took hold of her head. “Look at me!”
Su Wan immediately let out a hiss of pain, startling him. “What’s wrong?”
Su Wan irritably brushed his hand away. “I want to sleep now. Go away.”
“All right, all right, have a good rest. I’ll go buy you something. What do you want to eat?”
Su Wan looked at him. “Do you know what I’m angry about?”
“I know—it’s about Gu Yan, isn’t it? I promise, I absolutely won’t see her again, is that enough?”
Su Wan pressed her lips together. “That’s not what I meant. I know you have a past, but…”
She couldn’t finish. Mu Yunshen laughed softly. “All right, I get it. How about this—even if I have something to say to her, it’ll be with you present. Is that all right?”
Only then did Su Wan’s expression soften a little, and she gave a gentle hum of assent.
Mu Yunshen nodded and helped her lie down. “Get some sleep. I’ll have someone keep watch outside. I’ll go buy you something.”
Su Wan’s injury was just a hurt leg, nothing too serious, but since he insisted, she simply nodded.
As soon as Mu Yunshen closed the door, Pi Zi hurried over. “Brother Shen, I found out—it was Baldy’s crew. They were targeting our sister-in-law!”
Mu Yunshen’s expression darkened instantly. Pi Zi rolled up his sleeves. “This is outrageous. They actually dared lay a hand on our sister-in-law! Brother Shen, I’ll take the men and turn his place upside down right now!”
“No need,” Mu Yunshen said, his eyes narrowing. “I’ll go myself.”
He had said he would take care of her, but after buying her a bowl of beef noodles, he was about to leave. Su Wan saw his demeanor and called out to him.
“Where are you going?”
“There’s something I need to handle. I’ve already arranged for someone to look after you.”
Su Wan bit her lip. “Are you going to fight?”
Mu Yunshen paused, then shook his head. “No.”
“Don’t go, please?” Su Wan frowned, having sensed something.
Mu Yunshen returned and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. “Don’t worry, I’ll be back soon.”
Before Su Wan could say anything else, he had already turned and left.
Restlessness gnawed at Su Wan’s heart. She grabbed her phone and called Pi Zi.
No one answered.
Her face grew even grimmer. If not for her injured foot, she might have rushed out already.
After some thought, she finally dialed Gu Yan’s number.
Worry left her unable to eat, and even as she tried to sleep, she was jumpy and uneasy. In the middle of the night, her phone rang.
She answered at once.
“Su Wan, Brother Shen’s been taken to the police station. You’d better come quickly!”
She’d known it!
Su Wan hung up, called for the doctor, and despite objections, went straight to the police station in her wheelchair.
Several men were sitting there clutching their heads—one was so badly hurt he’d been sent to the hospital and was still in critical condition.
When the officer taking notes saw Su Wan, he stood up immediately. “Miss Su!”
Su Wan took a deep breath. “I’m here to bail someone out.”
“Who—?”
“Mu Yunshen?”
The man’s face immediately grew troubled, but before he could answer, another voice came from behind, “You’re too late. He’s already gone.”
At the sound of that voice, Su Wan froze where she stood.
