Chapter 34: If I Don't Take Care, Who Will?
Gu Yan hadn’t expected that all the excuses she’d carefully prepared would be cut off by Su Wan, leaving her momentarily unsure of how to proceed.
Just then, Su Wan’s phone rang. Hearing the caller’s words, her eyes darkened instantly. “I’ll be right there,” she said, then turned to Gu Yan. “Sorry, something urgent has come up. Please leave for now.” Without waiting for a reply, Su Wan opened the car door and left. Gu Yan hesitated, then decided to follow.
There had been an explosion at the construction site. A worker had been struck on the head by falling debris, and chaos reigned. Su Wan was about to step forward when her assistant pulled her back. “Ms. Su, you can’t go up there. It’s too dangerous!”
Su Wan shook off her assistant’s hand. “I have to see for myself.”
The injured worker lay on the ground, screaming in pain. Su Wan took two steps forward, only to see Gu Yan approaching—and beside her, a column...
Su Wan’s face changed dramatically; she rushed up and pushed Gu Yan out of the way. In that instant, the column collapsed with a thunderous crash, crushing Su Wan’s foot.
—
When Mu Yunshen arrived at the hospital, Gu Yan was sitting there, crying uncontrollably.
“What happened?” he asked.
Gu Yan immediately stood up at the sound of his voice, whimpering as if to throw herself into his arms, but Mu Yunshen stopped her. “How is Su Wan?”
Gu Yan wiped her tears. “I’m sorry... It’s all because of me. If it weren’t for me…”
“Where is the patient’s family?” The doctor emerged from the operating room, and Mu Yunshen quickly stepped forward. “I am.”
“The patient has a fractured right tibia. There’s no head injury, but further examination is needed. She’s awake now; you may go in.”
Mu Yunshen breathed a sigh of relief, disregarding Gu Yan as he hurried inside.
Su Wan lay on the bed, struggling to sit up. Mu Yunshen went to her immediately, helping her. “Your leg’s broken. What are you trying to do?”
Su Wan froze at his touch. Realizing it was him, she didn’t look up but turned to get out of bed.
Mu Yunshen held her back. “Where are you going?”
“To the bathroom,” Su Wan replied tersely, shooting him a glare.
Mu Yunshen was taken aback. Gu Yan stepped forward quickly. “Let me help you.”
“No need. Where’s my assistant? Linda!”
“She’s gone to handle the admission paperwork,” Gu Yan replied, supporting her. “Let me help.”
Su Wan couldn’t refuse and allowed Gu Yan to assist her. Her leg couldn’t touch the ground at all; despite her attempts to control herself, her whole body leaned toward Gu Yan. Watching from behind, Mu Yunshen grew increasingly anxious, finally stepping forward and scooping Su Wan up in his arms.
“What are you doing? Put me down!”
“Relax, I won’t peek.”
Su Wan’s face flushed scarlet. She gritted her teeth. “Put me down!”
Linda finally returned. After some effort, Su Wan managed to resolve her physical needs and immediately turned to her. “When can I be discharged?”
“Ms. Su, it takes a hundred days for bones and tendons to heal. The doctor said you’ll need to stay at least two weeks.”
“What about work?”
“Look at yourself now—still thinking about the company?” Mu Yunshen said, irritated.
Ignoring him, Su Wan looked at Linda. “How’s the injured worker?”
“He’s been taken to the hospital as well. The police have been notified. The bomb is still under investigation.”
“A bomb?” Mu Yunshen’s eyes darkened.
Gu Yan nodded. “Yes, it’s terrifying!”
Mu Yunshen pressed his lips together and sat beside Su Wan. “You just woke up. Don’t overthink it. Rest. I’ll take care of you.”
“I don’t need your care,” Su Wan snapped, glaring at him.
“I’m your boyfriend. If I don’t look after you, who will? Linda, right? You take care of the company. Gu Yan, you should head back as well.”
With a few words, Mu Yunshen sent them away, then sat beside Su Wan. “Are you in pain? Is there anything you want to eat?”
