Chapter 19: I
Mu Yunshen acted as if he hadn’t heard a word, lying there and pretending to sleep.
But Su Wan knew he had heard everything.
She reached out and pushed him. “I’m talking to you!”
Mu Yunshen clicked his tongue. “Why are you so harsh? If it weren’t for me just now, both you and your father would’ve been done for.”
Su Wan gritted her teeth and stared at him. “So, is this all connected to you?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You do know.”
At last, Mu Yunshen glanced at her. “What are you trying to say? That I wanted to kill your father?”
“You know that man, don’t you? You were surprised to find out who I was tonight. So, if it weren’t for me, maybe… you’d have let him do as he pleased. Isn’t that right?”
Her voice was steady, but her hands were trembling.
Mu Yunshen didn’t reply. He merely chuckled, then opened the car door and got out.
Su Wan hadn’t expected that reaction. Her expression shifted; she hurriedly got out and chased after him. “Mu Yunshen!”
He didn’t answer, and walked quickly. She had to run to catch up, grabbing his hand. “I’m talking to you!”
“If you’ve already made up your mind, why talk to me at all?” Mu Yunshen looked at her, his face void of expression. “Do you trust me?”
“I…”
“In your eyes, aren’t I just some thug? So, murder and robbery must be tied to me, right?”
“That’s not what I meant…”
“Then what do you mean?”
Su Wan wanted to explain when suddenly a voice called out, “Su Wan!”
She turned to see her father standing by the car, his face thunderous. “Come here, now!”
Su Wan didn’t move.
The smile at Mu Yunshen’s lips deepened. “Go on, Miss Mayor’s Daughter. You and I aren’t from the same world. As for your suspicions—if you have evidence, let the police come and arrest me. Don’t waste your time.”
Just then, a car pulled up beside them. Before Su Wan could reply, Mu Yunshen climbed in and was gone.
She tried to follow, but a hand grabbed her from behind, yanking her back.
“What are you doing, Dad? Let go of me!”
“You’re coming home with me!” Su Yichuan was angrier than she’d ever seen him. He didn’t wait for her reply, dragging her into the car.
—
Su Yichuan hurled what he was holding to the ground.
“Absurd! Absolutely absurd! The last time Shaoran told me, I didn’t believe it. But now—how can I not? Su Wan, do you know who you are? How could you be with a hooligan like that?”
“If it weren’t for him tonight, neither of us would be alive,” Su Wan replied.
He choked on her words before barking, “Can’t you see? They’re in cahoots!”
“If that’s true, you could have had him arrested. Why is he fine? If he’s fine, then he’s innocent, and that makes him our savior.”
“You… Are you trying to infuriate me? You’re my daughter, Su Yichuan, and now you’re with a—”
“He’s not a hooligan!” Su Wan interrupted. “And he’s saved me more than once. I… I want to be with him!”
“What did you say?” Su Yichuan’s eyes widened.
Su Wan took a deep breath and repeated herself. “I want to be with him. I love him!”
No sooner had she finished speaking than a stinging slap landed across her cheek.
