Chapter 118
Avril was taken aback, feeling somewhat awkward. She lowered her head, flustered, and muttered, "What does a little girl know? You're just spouting nonsense!" Despite her denial, her face flushed slightly.
Eva immediately teased, "Sister, you're blushing!" She poked her head right in front of Avril, scrutinizing every change in her expression with earnest intensity before saying meaningfully, "Sister, you must be in love with him!" Eva said it with absolute certainty.
Shy and annoyed, Avril shot her a sidelong glance. "You're just a child, what do you know?"
"Sister, I'm not a child anymore! I'm twenty years old, a completely mature woman!" Eva retorted, hands on her hips, standing before Avril with a huff of indignation.
"Look at you. In this state, where is the grace of a 'mature' woman?" Avril looked at her, feigning seriousness.
"Sister, don't change the subject! We were clearly talking about your dear fiancé!" Eva suddenly realized she had almost been sidetracked and quickly steered the conversation back to the original topic.
Avril’s expression flickered. She stood up and walked toward the door, saying, "Alright, Eva, it's getting late. You aren't well; you should get some rest." She then ignored Eva’s protests and closed the door.
"Sister!" Eva’s call was met only by the sound of the wooden door shutting.
The moment she closed the door, Avril’s expression turned cold and unreadable.
Back in the room, Eva was left alone. The silence was punctuated only by the sound of her own breathing, and the mysterious man from earlier inexplicably flooded her thoughts again.
Just thinking about him made her heart ache with a faint, sharp pain. Moreover, based on what he had said and his tone, it was clear they must have known each other in the past, and their relationship could not have been shallow. Otherwise, she surely wouldn't have let him kiss her.
At this thought, Eva’s face burned, and her heart pounded incessantly.
Who was that man?
She couldn't help but rack her brain, trying to recall anything about him.
But—
The cheeks that had been flushed red from shyness turned pale in an instant. Her brows furrowed, and she clutched her head with both hands, sliding down onto the carpet.
Her head hurt! It hurt so much! Far worse than the previous times!
How could this be?
Could it mean that this man played a very important role in her lost memories?
Before she could think further, just as the pain in her head reached a breaking point, she blacked out.
In that final moment of consciousness, there was only one thought: *Who is that man?*
Meanwhile, in another room, Yuwen Xi was not faring much better. He sat alone on a wide windowsill, his left leg propped up with his arm resting on his knee, his right leg stretched out along the sill, his gaze fixed on the boundless night outside.
His ocean-blue eyes were now as dark as ink. Despite his pallor, it was clear his mood was low, perhaps even repressed and painful.
That woman, Lan Yingyue—ever since she had stirred ripples in his lonely heart a few years ago, it had never been calm again. Everything he looked at, everything he longed for, was her every smile and frown. From that moment, he knew he had been bewitched—by a love curse cast by a woman named Lan Yingyue.
Yet, after provoking him, she had thrown herself into another man's arms, giving her heart to someone else as well.
Yes, ever since he saw that man named Arthur appear, he knew clearly that the relationship between Yingyue and him was extraordinary. Whenever they were together, even if they weren't speaking, or even if they were glaring at each other, there was an exclusionary air flowing between them, as if they were the only two people in the world and everyone else was superfluous. Between them, there was no room for anyone else.
They only had each other.
Yet, even so, he had still lost his heart to that woman, unable to reclaim it.
But now, he seemed to have a reason to possess her.
Because—she had lost her memory!
She had forgotten everything—including the man etched into her heart!
Perhaps heaven was pitying him, wanting to give him a chance to taste love.
Regardless, this time, he would fight. He would strive to make her love him instead of that wicked, charming man who always hurt her!
Thinking this, Yuwen Xi willfully ignored how Yingyue had lost her memory; he only knew that she was by his side now, and her memories were a blank slate.
Then, this time, he would be the one to paint the color of love for her!
Perhaps starting over and getting to know each other would be a good beginning for him and Yingyue.
No sooner thought than done, Yuwen Xi jumped off the windowsill and headed toward Eva’s room.
When he reached the door, his heart skipped a beat, but he summoned the courage to knock.
"Knock, knock, knock—"
There was no response. It was quite late; could she be asleep?
"Knock, knock, knock—"
He knocked again. Still, no answer.
She must be asleep. Yuwen Xi sighed in disappointment and prepared to return to his room. After walking a few steps, he turned back, hesitating at the door. Perhaps he could just slip inside and take a look; just seeing her would be enough.
So, Yuwen Xi quietly opened the door. The moment it creaked open, his gaze instinctively swept the room, and he stepped inside.
She wasn't on the bed!
Was she in the bathroom?
As he pondered and started toward the bathroom, his gaze was caught by a frail figure on the carpet beside the bed.
"Eva!" Yuwen Xi rushed to the bedside, scooped Eva into his arms, and called out in a panic, "Eva, Eva, wake up! What happened to you?" He patted her face, trying to rouse her, but Eva remained pale and unconscious in his arms, showing no signs of waking.
Yuwen Xi panicked. He picked her up and ran outside, shouting, "Get the car ready, quickly!"
Avril, Mr. Weting, and Dr. Bentley, who had rushed over at the commotion, saw Eva unconscious in Yuwen Xi’s arms and ran over. "What happened? What’s going on? What’s wrong with Eva?"
Yuwen Xi didn't bother to answer; he just kept running with Eva.
After a moment of shock, Avril and Mr. Weting recovered and blocked the distraught Yuwen Xi.
"What happened to Miss Eva?" Dr. Bentley, seeing Eva unconscious in Yuwen Xi’s arms, abandoned all decorum and rushed over, trying to take her from his grasp. Losing control of his emotions, he blurted out, "What did you do to Eva? Why did she faint? Tell me, tell me! What did you do to her? Why is she like this?!"
"How would I know?!" Yuwen Xi was furious at being falsely accused. "When I went into her room, she was already lying on the floor!" He shouted it loudly, but Dr. Bentley didn't believe him, still glaring at him as if he were a murderer.
"Regardless, Eva’s health is what matters most right now. Let’s take her back to her room first," Avril said, acting as a mediator to diffuse the tension.
"Avril is right. George, put Eva on the bed first. Her health is the priority!" Mr. Weting looked at Dr. Bentley and Yuwen Xi with disapproval.
The difference was that his look toward Yuwen Xi was one of helplessness, while his look toward Dr. Bentley was a frown, appearing dissatisfied with his rude behavior.
Hearing Mr. Weting’s words, a flash of inferiority crossed Dr. Bentley’s heart. He stopped arguing with Yuwen Xi and lowered his head.
Yuwen Xi, hearing this, looked at the pale, unconscious Eva in his arms, his face set in a tight mask. He said nothing more, turned around, and strode back toward Eva’s room.
Avril followed immediately.
As for Dr. Bentley, since Mr. Weting hadn't spoken, he stood rooted to the spot, not daring to leave, though he was incredibly anxious inside.
Mr. Weting glanced at Dr. Bentley and walked toward the room. As he passed him, he stopped and said in a voice only the two of them could hear, "I hope you always remember your place," his tone extremely calm, "Dr. Bentley!" He didn't emphasize the words "Dr." and "Bentley," but the listener understood exactly what was implied.
Dr. Bentley stiffened, a strange emotion crossing his eyes.
After Mr. Weting finished, he continued on. Seeing the doctor still standing there, he said impatiently, "Dr. Bentley!"
Dr. Bentley snapped back to reality. "Yes." He then followed Mr. Weting into the room.
Yuwen Xi had been sitting by the bed, but seeing the doctor enter, he reluctantly stood up, his eyes fixed on the doctor’s back as if he could bore a hole through it.
Dr. Bentley felt severely wounded in body and spirit; he even found himself doubting his own medical expertise!
Because his hands were trembling uncontrollably.
*Can't you stop staring at me like that?* Dr. Bentley cursed inwardly.
Unfortunately, no one knew or cared about his thoughts.
"Does your shaking suggest that you are no longer qualified to be Eva’s private physician?" Yuwen Xi asked coldly, frowning at the doctor’s trembling hands.
