Chapter 160: So He Went to See Her
When Qiao Jiu woke up the next morning, the other side of the bed was already empty.
Lu Fengzhou had mentioned going on a business trip today, though it was unclear what time his flight was for him to leave so early.
She got up, washed up, and made breakfast.
While eating, she checked her phone, but Lu Fengzhou had left her no messages. Based on her understanding of him, there was an eighty percent chance he was sulking again.
This man was simply never satisfied. He would get annoyed when she made a fuss, yet feel unsettled when she tried to be understanding and accommodating.
Casually scrolling through her phone, she noticed that the photo Guan Wei had posted yesterday on her Moments had been deleted.
Who knew if she had quarreled with Liang Xiujin, only for him to turn around and coax her back into a good mood.
After breakfast, Qiao Jiu took a taxi to the office, mainly because she had a backlog of matters she wanted to take care of.
However, before she had worked for long, the office door was suddenly pushed open.
Qiao Jiu was startled, and the person who opened the door gave a slight start as well.
Liang Xiucheng looked at her and said, "I heard a sound coming from the office, but I didn't expect you to actually be here."
Qiao Jiu stretched and replied, "I had some unfinished business that I didn't have time to deal with yesterday, so I came in today to sort it out."
Liang Xiucheng closed the door and walked in. "If it's not urgent, you didn't need to sacrifice your day off. Handling it on a workday tomorrow would have been fine."
Qiao Jiu had already nearly finished, so she took the opportunity to ask, "Why did you come in today?"
Liang Xiucheng pulled out a chair and sat down. "I mostly just didn't want to stay at home. The atmosphere there isn't great."
Qiao Jiu immediately thought of Guan Wei. "Did your brother get into another fight with Guan Wei?"
"Did they?" Liang Xiucheng said. "I'm not entirely sure, but my brother's state of mind is definitely not good."
With that, he clicked his tongue twice and added, "It's normal for young couples to quarrel, especially when there's a troublemaker stirring things up on the side."
Qiao Jiu let out a chuckle. "Your brother, too. Usually, he seems like such a clear-headed person; how does he get so muddled whenever he encounters Xu Yi?"
Liang Xiucheng thought for a moment and said, "It's true that my brother doesn't like her. Actually..."
He hesitated slightly before continuing, "Before any of you knew about Xu Yi, she had already come to find my brother. Back then, my brother threw her out directly. Later on, it seemed the Xu family approached him, and I don't know what was said, but his attitude toward Xu Yi softened a lot."
His tone carried a hint of emotion as he concluded, "Still, by doing this, Boss Guan is truly being wronged in the middle. Anyone can see that."
Qiao Jiu gave a dry laugh. "Knowing she's being wronged hasn't stopped your brother from acting this way. What's the use of just knowing?"
She originally wanted to bring up the post Guan Wei had shared on her Moments yesterday, but realizing that it had already been deleted, she decided against mentioning it.
After sitting there for a while, Liang Xiucheng left to attend to his own work. Qiao Jiu zoned out for a moment, then suddenly remembered something and hurriedly grabbed her phone to check her call logs.
Mu Yun had called her previously, though she couldn't remember the number. There had been many calls from unknown numbers during that period, but she vaguely recalled that the other party had called twice, which narrowed it down slightly.
She still remembered Song Wan's number, but there was no way she could directly ask Song Wan about certain things. Song Wan was even worse than a troublemaker—she was the very trouble itself.
After scrolling through the logs for quite a while, she actually found it.
Qiao Jiu clutched her phone, hesitated for a moment, and dialed the number. In truth, she didn't even know what she wanted to say; she was simply acting on a sudden impulse.
The call went unanswered on the first ring. After pausing for a little over a minute, Qiao Jiu dialed a second time.
This time, the call was picked up near the end of the ringing.
The surroundings on the other end sounded noisy and chaotic, and Mu Yun's voice carried a hint of agitation as she answered with a curt greeting.
Qiao Jiu coughed lightly. "Hello..."
She had barely uttered those two words when a voice called out from afar, "Teacher Mu, Teacher Mu, please come over quickly..."
Following that came the sound of Mu Yun running somewhere, her footsteps hurried, and then a series of screams.
If Qiao Jiu's ears weren't failing her, those screams belonged to Song Wan.
Song Wan sounded like a trapped beast, wailing and howling without forming coherent sentences.
Mu Yun hadn't had time to hang up the phone; a dull thud echoed through the line, likely the sound of the phone being tossed onto a table.
Qiao Jiu remained silent, simply listening quietly from her end.
Mu Yun rushed over to comfort Song Wan, telling her not to act up and warning her that her wounds would tear open.
Song Wan's screams were laced with sobs, sounding intensely painful.
As a mother, her heart naturally ached, and Mu Yun's subsequent voice trembled as well.
Unaware of Song Wan's condition, Qiao Jiu furrowed her brow. Was she ill?
Someone nearby could be heard shouting for a nurse to quickly prepare a sedative.
The nurse acknowledged the order. After a few more moments of howling from the other side, Song Wan's voice faded away, leaving only Mu Yun's choked voice.
She said, "Ah-zhou will be here soon. Just hold on a little longer."
Lu Fengzhou?
So he had gone to see Song Wan all along.
Qiao Jiu let out a soft chuckle on her end. What was so difficult about being honest about this?
Even if he had simply told her the truth that he was going to see Song Wan, given her current frame of mind, she wouldn't have had any other thoughts about it.
With Song Wan's crying and shouting gone, Mu Yun's rambling words stood out with exceptional clarity. Most of them were expressions of self-blame, claiming that she had failed to raise her properly since childhood, which had led to such an extreme personality, and adding that Lu Fengzhou was also to be pitied, pleading with Song Wan not to make things difficult for him.
Finding it uninteresting after listening for a short while, Qiao Jiu hung up the phone directly.
She tossed her phone onto the desk and leaned back in her chair.
What unfortunate timing. She wondered if Mu Yun would mention her phone call today to Lu Fengzhou. That man was cunning and easily suspicious.
Fortunately, she had only said two words from beginning to end, making it easy to explain away later.
She waited until noon, when Liang Xiucheng pushed the door open and said, "You're still not leaving? Let's go get lunch together."
Qiao Jiu didn't have much of an appetite, but she still got to her feet. "Let's go."
As the two of them walked downstairs and reached the entrance of the lobby, they saw Liang Xiujin's car pulling up.
The parking spaces in front of the company were all empty. He drove at a high speed, executing a sharp drift into a parking slot before slamming on the brakes.
Qiao Jiu and Liang Xiucheng stopped in their tracks simultaneously, watching Liang Xiujin push open the door and step out.
Lowering her voice, she murmured, "Your brother really looks like he's in a bad mood."
Liang Xiujin must have known Qiao Jiu was there, as he strode directly toward her. "Qiao Jiu..."
Qiao Jiu could more or less guess what he was going to say; on a weekend like this, he certainly wasn't going to chat with her about work.
She stated, "If you want to ask about Guan Wei, it's not that I don't want to tell you, but I genuinely know nothing."
Pausing for a second, she continued, "Instead of coming to me, you'd be better off going straight to her. Finding out what you want to know directly from her own mouth will always be more efficient than getting secondhand information from me."
Liang Xiujin sighed. "I can't get in touch with her, and I can't find her anywhere."
Well now, that came as a genuine surprise to Qiao Jiu.
After thinking it over for a moment, she fished out her phone, took a few steps back, and dialed Guan Wei's number.
A mechanical automated voice answered—Guan Wei had turned her phone off.
Qiao Jiu turned back around, shrugged at Liang Xiujin, and said, "I can't help you either."
Seeing her reaction, Liang Xiujin immediately understood the situation. His brows furrowed. "She just suddenly became like this, I have no idea..."
"Suddenly?" Qiao Jiu interrupted him. "Nothing happens suddenly. Mr. Liang should take some time to reflect on whether you did something. Based on my understanding of Guan Wei, she isn't someone who would lose her temper for no reason."
