Volume 8: Super Mission 'Vitality vs. Death Intent' - Chapter 4: Total Defeat Without Even a Weakness

Reckless Curse was a famous spell of the curse school. Its effect was similar to that of the fire spell Berserk Madness: it made its target hot-headed and attack the nearest living creature indiscriminately, friend or foe. However, the target would regain consciousness the moment it was struck in return. Unless it could kill an enemy instantly, it was little more than a useless spell employed to create chaos and disrupt the enemy formation.

But now, the spell seemed to have another use. Realizing this, Li Bin shouted, “All Mummy Curse Mages, cast Reckless Curse on those treants!”

No one asked why. Every Mummy Curse Mage immediately began casting, and the Netherworld Lamp Djinns, who were likewise skilled in curses, joined in as well. Under the light of more than thirty yellow curses, crimson radiance appeared simultaneously in the eyes of the treants.

Reid and Ted wisely accelerated their troops away from the treants, allowing the creatures to crowd together. Soon, the first hot-headed treant launched an attack, casually punching its companion beside it. Several roots then shot rapidly from the ground, wrapping tightly around the victim. The attacker was immediately struck in return and became entangled in place as well.

In this way, all the treants became tangled with one another, unable to move even an inch. After all, the only ways to break free of a treant’s root entanglement were for the treant itself to move—or for the treant to die.

Seeing this, Li Bin cried out excitedly, “Now you can do it! You’ve gone from shooting slow-moving targets to shooting stationary ones. If you still can’t defeat them, you might as well stop calling yourselves archers!”

At that, Gru and Little Carter no longer paid any attention to the sprites still darting chaotically before their eyes. They aimed toward the trapped treants and raised their hands, unleashing a succession of shots.

By the time Li Bin had wiped out all the sprites with a Cloud of Death, they had completed their own task. Every single treant had been reduced to splinters.

Gazing at his subordinates in their ruined state, Gai Ya stared at Li Bin in disbelief. Li Bin merely shrugged.

“You should understand that a unit’s usefulness doesn’t come from having a high level and no weaknesses. In this game, what matters is coordination.”

“That sounds easy enough when you say it,” Gai Ya replied, staring at Li Bin. “Do you think I don’t want to bring other troops? This was arranged by the Council of Elders. Even those sprites were obtained only after I demanded them repeatedly for a long time.”

“Exactly. You gain nothing by following the Green Leaves Everywhere Alliance. Why not join us in resisting their tyranny?” Li Bin said with a smile as he walked toward Gai Ya.

“No need. I’ve already completed quite a few chain quests. Even if the Green Leaves Everywhere Alliance fails, I’ll still receive a substantial reward.” Gai Ya shook his head. “Besides, what if the Green Leaves Everywhere Alliance succeeds? Wouldn’t that be even better?”

“That’s true enough,” Li Bin said with a smile. “But I do want to ask you something. What exactly is the ‘Vitality vs. Deathly Intent’ quest?”

“I don’t know much about it either. The only people who might know everything are the three elders of the Council.” Gai Ya shook his head. “But I heard the quest came from a mountain range in the northernmost part of this continent. And one of the three elders is the guardian of that quest.”

“From a mountain range in the far north?” Li Bin began rapidly considering whether he should go there and investigate.

Seeing his expression, Gai Ya did not linger. After abandoning the quest he held, he turned and walked away step by step.

At that moment, Li Bin also received the system notification for the quest-completion reward. He had previously received reward items directly from the system, but this was his first time obtaining a reward in the form of combat units.

Before long, a selection list of level-nine undead units appeared before him. Besides the proper level-nine unit, the Death Knight, it included units such as the level-nine Lich. There were even level-nine Skeleton Soldiers that could advance into Skeleton Kings, as well as level-nine Corpse Soldiers that could advance into Corpse Fiends.

What surprised Li Bin most was another level-nine unit: the Messenger Bone Dragon. Like the Messenger Cherub from the Tears of Sorrow, this communication unit possessed the ability to transmit messages over great distances. However, exchanging ten of them would leave Li Bin unable to obtain any troops that could improve his actual strength.

In the end, Li Bin still chose the standard level-nine unit, the Death Knight. Ted had been leading Skeleton Knights for far too long. If he did not receive reinforcements soon, he might even lose the Death Knights he had originally brought with him.

At Li Bin’s selection, ten Death Knights appeared behind him. With a casual wave, Li Bin let Ted take them into his ranks.

At that moment, Sorrowful Melody and the others, who had remained in Galai City, arrived after receiving the news. The instant he saw Li Bin, Sorrowful Melody exclaimed, “Brother Li, you’re incredible! This is the first time I’ve ever seen such a flawless victory.”

“Not as impressive as you make it sound,” Li Bin said with a long sigh. “I really couldn’t handle them at first. I never expected Gai Ya to possess such powerful air magic. It’s just a shame that he ended up in the hands of the Green Leaves Everywhere Alliance.”

“It doesn’t matter. He’s only helping the Green Leaves Everywhere Alliance because of the quest. As long as we destroy their final quest, he’ll be free,” Sorrowful Melody said with a smile.

“That’s right. So I’ve decided to hurry to the place where the quest began. Perhaps in a few days, the Green Leaves Everywhere Alliance will be dismantled,” Li Bin declared.

“Exactly. How could I stay out of something like this? I’m coming too,” Almu replied at once.

“But couldn’t you stay in the city for a few more days? Let us show you some hospitality,” Sorrowful Melody said reluctantly.

“It’s all right. There will be plenty of chances for us to trouble you in the future,” Li Bin said with a smile.

Sorrowful Melody was extraordinarily enthusiastic despite this. Once he realized he could not persuade Li Bin and the others to stay longer, he immediately brought out a large quantity of supplies and forcibly stuffed them into their hands.

In the end, Li Bin, Bai Lingyu, Cui Sixing, and Almu left the city amid Sorrowful Melody’s farewell. With that, their third chain quest, “Rescue Galai City,” was completed. Silently, a new quest appeared on their quest log:
