Chapter 89 Gu Shiyan’s Weakness
Luo Xing stared at the words on her phone, her steps quickening as she jogged forward a few paces. In her mind, she recalled a phrase she had once uttered—a mere flirtatious remark tossed at Gu Shiyan in the past. Yet the truth was, she had never witnessed Gu Shiyan in any drunken, tender state. Li Zhao had told her that when he drank, he preferred to shut himself away in his room.
Qi Changbai watched Luo Xing dash up to him, chuckling, "Is a ghost chasing you? You run like a monkey." Luo Xing slowed, retorting, "Then walking so slowly, are you trying to be a tortoise?" Qi Changbai was momentarily silenced. Today, Luo Xing seemed unusually sharp.
Gu Shiyan followed behind with a leisurely air, his eyes fixed on Luo Xing, a faint smile tugging at his lips. Luo Xing felt scorched by that teasing grin. She was suddenly helpless and irritated—why was it that Gu Shiyan could so easily sway her emotions every time?
Luo Xing stopped, her gaze piercing through the three between them, settling on Gu Shiyan at the back. She called his name. The three in the middle halted; Luo Xing’s expression was severe, reminiscent of a teacher admonishing her students.
"I’ve already broken up with you. Why do you still send me those messages? Whether you drink or not has nothing to do with me, even if you’re drunk it doesn’t concern me." Luo Xing looked at him, speaking each word with deliberate clarity. "We will never return to what we were."
So, don’t stir her heart again.
Deciding not to love Gu Shiyan had taken tremendous resolve. Even though he crept into her thoughts from every angle, she endured it all. Luo Xing had struggled so hard to move on; how could she ever go back to the beginning? She and Gu Shiyan simply did not belong to the same world.
It was not just Gu Shiyan; even the three in the middle were stunned. Luo Xing felt a twinge of guilt and dropped her head.
"I hadn’t wanted to say this, since we’re all on the same team and are bound to see each other often. But I hope you won’t speak to me about liking or not liking again. We don’t need that between us—we only need to be good teammates and win the match together."
Luo Xing let out a breath. That should make things clear to Gu Shiyan. She raised her eyes to him, only to find his face calm and indifferent. He nodded, lowered his head with a light laugh, and strode over to her, his gaze deep. "Understood—teammate."
The last two syllables were pronounced with emphasis; not only Luo Xing, but the three behind him heard it as well.
Luo Xing swallowed back the curse rising in her chest.
He was clearly just brushing her off.
Luo Xing shot him a cold glance, staring at her toes as she walked onward.
No one noticed two familiar figures standing in the distance.
Yao Xiangming watched as Ke Yu fiddled with his phone, adjusting its angle.
He laughed, "Still holding a grudge, are you?"
Both wore basketball jerseys, having just finished a school match and heading to dinner. From afar, Ke Yu had spotted Luo Xing and followed her furtively. When he saw who was behind her, he nearly fled—after all, the shadow cast by Gu Shiyan’s last encounter still lingered.
Then he heard Luo Xing call out to Gu Shiyan.
Ke Yu pulled out his phone and started recording.
Ke Yu smirked, swiping across the screen, his voice cold. "I never expected it—they really broke up. Wasn’t it Luo Xing who was chasing after Gu Shiyan? Looks like the tables have turned."
Yao Xiangming's eyes were fixed on the screen. Hearing Luo Xing’s forceful voice, he smiled, "What are you going to do with that recording?"
Ke Yu paused, not having thought it through—just something to watch later and gloat. Even someone as wealthy and handsome as Gu Shiyan got dumped; it felt oddly satisfying.
"Gu Shiyan isn’t invincible, you know his weakness?" Yao Xiangming looked at Ke Yu with a smile.
"What weakness?" Ke Yu glanced at him.
"Why is he so arrogant? Isn’t it just because he was born well—a rich boy. Do you think his family would let him be with someone from a modest background like Luo Xing? Would they tolerate Gu Shiyan truly falling for her?"
Ke Yu narrowed his eyes, catching Yao Xiangming’s drift. "You mean, send this to his father?"
Yao Xiangming shrugged indifferently, "Do you think such an inconclusive video would matter to his father?"
Ke Yu was confused, "Then what did you mean just now?"
Yao Xiangming, still holding a basketball net, locked eyes with Ke Yu and smiled deeply. "These things only catch the capitalists’ attention when they become headlines. If Gu Shiyan just plays around, his family won’t bother. But if his affairs with women get the company in trouble, do you think his father would still ignore it?"
Yao Xiangming looked at the video on his phone, tapped the screen, and paused it.
"Remember when Gu Shiyan hit you last time and I recorded it?"
Ke Yu suddenly understood Yao Xiangming’s intention. "You mean, stir up public opinion?"
Yao Xiangming put his hands in his pockets and walked ahead.
Ke Yu looked at the video, a hint of thought forming. He caught up with Yao Xiangming, asking him to send the video of Gu Shiyan hitting him.
Yao Xiangming replied to a message, agreeing.
Ke Yu glanced at the phone, seeing only a note marked with two characters, but before he could read it, Yao Xiangming exited the chat and sent him the video.
...
At the Gu family home, Gu Liang sat in his study, holding the itinerary his assistant had just handed him regarding Gu Shiyan’s last trip to the capital. Upon seeing that Gu Shiyan had met with a celebrity, Gu Liang frowned, sensing something amiss.
After Gu Shiyan returned from the capital, that celebrity had also terminated her contract with the entertainment company under the Lu Group. Following that, news broke of cooperation between Gu Group and Lu Group.
Gu Liang pondered briefly and understood the connections. Yet one clue remained elusive—he could not grasp why Gu Shiyan was doing all this. Gu Shiyan was not one to meddle in other people’s affairs.
Gu Liang knew the Lu family’s two sons were notorious for their excesses; if Gu Shiyan were meddlesome, that celebrity would not have been bullied under Lu Yuanyi for so long. Nonetheless, Gu Liang focused on the partnership between Gu Group and Lu Group.
Gu Liang finally felt a measure of satisfaction with Gu Shiyan—for whatever reason, at least he had accomplished something worthwhile.
Back then, the old man had threatened that if he died, they would get nothing. But in reality, all three brothers still coveted the family inheritance. Gu Liang’s ambitions were less fierce, but who didn’t want more? If he didn’t compete, the other two would. They all bore the Gu name; naturally, the shares should be equal.
"Uncle Gu, Mom asked me to bring you some milk," Su Mo placed the glass on Gu Liang’s desk.
"Let the staff handle this. You finally have a holiday—get some rest," Gu Liang replied without looking up, casually taking a sip.
The document on Gu Shiyan caught Su Mo’s eye. She arched her brows and smiled, "It’s nothing, just a small matter. Uncle Gu, I’m grateful you helped pay Grandma’s medical bills."
Gu Liang waved his hand, not caring—such an amount was barely a drop in the bucket for him.
Su Mo could see how indifferent Gu Liang was toward her. Of course, these people of wealth always looked down from above, thinking that keeping her here meant she should be forever grateful, groveling at their feet like a dutiful servant.
Su Mo pressed her fingers to the tray, glanced again at the document beside Gu Liang, and finally smiled, wishing Uncle Gu a good night before leaving.
