Gu Shiyan turned around.
“She said it herself,” Qi Zhi replied.
When Gu Shiyan left the apartment, his eyes remained fixed on his phone. He was so absorbed in it that he even tripped while descending the stairs, yet paid no attention to the fall.
On the phone was the Weibo account Qi Zhi had shown him.
It belonged to Luo Xing.
Qi Zhi had discovered by chance that the anonymous account was hers.
The latest posts read:
—I didn’t mean to say that about him. I know he isn’t that kind of person.
—This is so hard. I feel like I can’t forget him. My mind tells me not to like him anymore, but I still do.
—I heard someone call his name, and my heart skipped a beat. I thought he had returned to Beicheng.
—I read papers all day and didn’t think of him once. Good job. No, wait—I think I’m thinking about him now? Ugh, annoying.
—The bracelet was for me? The Star of Zhaoyi was for me too? Does he want to marry me? Does he want to be with me forever? No, no, no. Fake, fake, fake. I’m not falling for it, I’m not falling for it, I’m not falling for it. Ugh, this is so annoying.
Gu Shiyan scrolled through the posts one by one, reading every word and every punctuation mark without missing a thing.
—I told my friends that I’m going to break up with him.
—I dreamed that he was with someone else. I wasn’t his leading lady; I was just a clownish supporting character who couldn’t stay by his side for more than two months. It hurt so much. What should I do?
—He had already agreed to be with me. He was already my boyfriend. Why did he still play games with his senior and reject me?
—I spent the whole afternoon here being eaten alive by mosquitoes, and he even yelled at me.
—He agreed! He’s my boyfriend now!
—Mm. I happened to see him in the cafeteria today. He ate so little and looked upset. What on earth is wrong?
—The new term has begun, and we’re at the same university! I’m so excited that I’ll get to see him tomorrow. I’ve decided to pursue him openly!
—School starts tomorrow! We’re in the same major and the same class! Who knew that cursed physics could be so difficult?
That was the first post she had published.
It was dated the night before the start of her freshman year.
Gu Shiyan’s shadowed gaze fell upon the account name: We Are Destined to Love One Another.
By the time he had finished reading them all, night had fallen.
Luo Xing had posted several entries almost every day, and every one of them concerned him.
Gu Shiyan raised his head and only then realized that he had somehow walked all the way to Beicheng No. 1 High School.
It was the place where Luo Xing had secretly loved him for three years.
A sudden regret seized Gu Shiyan. What a pity. If he had noticed that love, always following behind him, a little sooner, would things have turned out differently?
Perhaps he and Luo Xing would have gone to university hand in hand after high school. She could have chosen the major she truly liked instead of selecting one she disliked merely to follow him.
It was already so late, yet the classroom buildings of Beicheng No. 1 High School were still lit. They were probably holding extended summer classes.

Four security guards stood at the entrance, making it impossible for outsiders to enter.
Gu Shiyan suddenly thought of something.
He walked around half the school and gazed at the wall before him. Then he smiled faintly. The school had gotten smarter—the wall was actually taller than it had been back then.
He turned his head and swept his gaze around before carrying over a stone from the nearby tree bed.
With ease, he climbed over the wall.
Several classroom buildings were dark, presumably those used by the first-year students.
Gu Shiyan walked toward one of them.
Third floor. Class One.
With a click, the lights in the classroom came on.
He walked to the last row.
Back then, seats had been assigned according to height, and he had sat in the last row.
Gu Shiyan did not pull out the chair and sit down. He merely stood in his old place, looking toward the blackboard, then toward...
No. He did remember Luo Xing.
That girl who always wore her hair in a high bun, nodding off in class until her head bobbed up and down, amusing everyone in the back rows—including Gu Shiyan.
It was as though a blade had torn open a seam in memories that had once seemed useless and been sealed away.
He remembered many things.
“Look, the Little Bun is dozing off again. Ha-ha.”
During class, his deskmate would poke Gu Shiyan in the elbow and signal for him to look.
For anything else, Gu Shiyan would not even spare it a glance.
But whenever he heard the words “Little Bun,” he would lazily lift his eyes and watch for a few seconds before being amused into a quiet laugh.
That was all.
During his first and second years of high school, he often watched that Little Bun slowly succumb to sleep. By his third year, however, he seemed never to see her again.
Gu Shiyan had once heard that the Little Bun was now working desperately to get into Xing University.
Quite a few people had mocked her for it.
The subject changed, and the deskmate who had just been making fun of her turned to ask Gu Shiyan, “What university are you going to apply to? You’ll probably study abroad, right?”
Gu Shiyan himself had no idea what impulse possessed him.
His gaze deepened as he looked at his deskmate, and he casually answered, “Xing University.”
He had never really thought about which university he would attend. Gu Liang would decide everything anyway.
Even if he made a choice himself, their homeroom teacher would eventually change it without his knowledge under Gu Liang’s pressure.
But as he listened to the mockery aimed at that Little Bun who was always nodding off in class yet had brought him so much amusement, an inexplicable irritation rose within him, and he named Xing University.
Unexpectedly, he followed through with it. He truly went against Gu Liang and firmly chose Xing University. At the time, however, it was largely an act of rebellion against the way Gu Liang casually manipulated his life.

For the rest of his third year, he never saw that Little Bun nodding off in class again.
The matter was soon forgotten and cast aside.
Gu Shiyan tried to find the seat where the Little Bun had once sat.
Relying on his memory, he actually found it and walked to the fourth row.
Gu Shiyan tried sitting there, wondering whether the position really made people so sleepy.
After all, anyone in Class One was either exceptionally gifted or worked themselves to the bone. Luo Xing seemed to be neither. She even fell asleep in class, yet whenever the results were announced, she somehow remained safely above the passing line, never giving the teachers a reason to transfer her to Class Two.
At that thought, a small incident suddenly surfaced in Gu Shiyan’s mind.
After class one day, he had been sleeping face down on his desk, his eyes closed and his thoughts hazy.
He heard people nearby discussing two individuals, but he caught only fragments.
Something about childhood sweethearts. Something about one of them having taught the other from the very beginning.
Only then did Gu Shiyan remember that they had probably been talking about Shen Que and Luo Xing.
His chest felt even more stifled. Whatever Shen Que could teach her, he could teach her too.
His phone vibrated several times.
He was just about to leave when his thigh caught on something beneath the desk. A fine line was snagged into his exquisitely tailored suit trousers. He looked down.
But his attention was drawn instead to a line of tiny words revealed inside the desk drawer.
Love at first sight is fate. I wonder whether I share that fate with him. I like Gu—
The name had not been written in full. Someone had cautiously written only the character Gu, then scratched out several strokes afterward. Even so, Gu Shiyan recognized it.
It was Luo Xing’s slightly childish, awkward handwriting.
Fate...
His phone vibrated again and again.
Gu Shiyan looked at the screen. Li Zhao and Yi Chuan had been trapped by someone.
When Gu Shiyan arrived at the private club by taxi, someone at the entrance personally came out to escort him inside.
“Damn, he really came?”
When the door opened, both Li Zhao and Yi Chuan looked astonished.
Gu Shiyan took one glance at the room, which was packed with people holding playing cards, and immediately understood what was happening.
Li Zhao tossed aside his cards and walked over. “Brother Yan, weren’t you in the capital?”
