Lo Xing smiled faintly. “Yes, I came with my grandmother. It has nothing to do with the Gu family.”

Wen Nuan frowned. “Grandmother?”

Lo Xing didn’t want to reveal too much. “I have other matters to attend to. I’ll leave first.”

But Wen Nuan called after her, “It’s not over yet, is it? You’re just going to leave?”

The voice behind Lo Xing was exceptionally gentle, causing her to instinctively lower her own tone. “I’m not part of the Gu family. I shouldn’t have come in the first place.”

As soon as Lo Xing finished speaking, she saw the girl before her crying even harder, sorrow deepening in her eyes.

Taken aback, Lo Xing stammered, “What’s wrong? Why are you crying?”

Wen Nuan sobbed softly, “I want to go in, to see Grandfather Gu one last time.”

“Can’t you go in?” Lo Xing asked, seeing how heartbroken she was, and instinctively thinking she must have some connection to the Gu family.

“I don’t dare. I have no face to go in,” Wen Nuan shook her head. Then suddenly, she looked up and drew closer to Lo Xing. “Could you help me deliver this to someone inside?”

Lo Xing glanced at the black box handed to her but didn’t take it. “Why don’t you go yourself?”

Wen Nuan lowered her head. “I can’t. I’ll pay you if you just give this to Gu Shiyan, okay? Gu Shiyan is Gu Taihua’s grandson. Do you know him?”

Lo Xing was silent. “You should go yourself.”

She turned to leave but was grabbed by the hand from behind. “Please, just give it to him. You don’t have to say anything. Please help me.”

“What’s inside?” Lo Xing asked.

“It’s... something that doesn’t belong to me,” Wen Nuan said, almost forcing the box into Lo Xing’s hand.

“Are you a relative?” Lo Xing inquired.

Wen Nuan hesitated. “Sort of.”

Lo Xing thought of Gu Shiyan’s father’s notorious reputation and briefly wondered if this crying girl outside might be Gu Liang’s daughter from another place.

“Lo Xing!”

Turning her head, Lo Xing saw Gu Shiyan walking toward her.

She wanted to speak to the girl beside her, but the girl had already run off, her figure disappearing around the corner quickly.

“What are you doing standing out here?” Gu Shiyan approached hurriedly, noticing the box in Lo Xing’s reddened hands.

“What’s this?”

Speaking as he walked, Gu Shiyan led Lo Xing to a nearby pavilion.

The snow melting on Lo Xing’s stray hair dampened her strands.

Gu Shiyan handed over a scarf.

“It’s yours.” Lo Xing gave him the box and took the scarf, wrapping it around her. Though she wore a heat patch, it still wasn’t enough to keep out the cold.

The long, wide scarf was wound twice, covering her chin.

Gu Shiyan blinked with dry eyelashes. “This is for me?”

Lo Xing glanced at the empty corridor. “There was a girl crying here earlier. She wanted me to give this to you. I refused at first, thinking she should do it herself, but when she saw you arrive, she ran off.”

Gu Shiyan frowned and opened the box.

Lo Xing peeked inside. There lay a lavish string of green jadeite beads.

Unbidden, Lo Xing thought of the jade bracelet Grandfather Gu had given.

With a click, Gu Shiyan closed the box.

“Where did she go?”

His tone was anxious.

Lo Xing shook her head. “I don’t know. She vanished as soon as she turned the corner.”

Clutching the box, Gu Shiyan took a few steps forward, scanning around.

Lo Xing rarely saw him so worried.

“You...” she wanted to ask, but Gu Liang’s words echoed in her mind.

She fell silent.

Gu Shiyan looked toward the end of the empty corridor and beckoned. A security guard approached.

“Is there a registration list for those entering?”

“Yes, right here.” The staff handed over a list.

Gu Shiyan scanned it but found no mention of Wen Nuan.

“Is there surveillance?”

“Yes.” The staff nodded.

Gu Shiyan looked at Lo Xing. “You should go back. It’s too cold outside.”

Lo Xing understood he was about to review the footage to find the girl and said nothing.

After Gu Shiyan left, she didn’t return but instead left through the main gate and took a taxi to her father’s apartment in Jing City.

At this hour, Luo Xingqi was still working. Lo Xing took a hot shower, then picked a room at random and lay down to rest.

When she awoke, the air was filled with the rich aroma of meat and vegetables.

She glanced toward the open door, where Luo Xingqi stood, apron-clad.

“Dad? You’re back?”

Lo Xing stepped out in ill-fitting slippers.

Luo Xingqi was just setting the dishes on the table.

As soon as Lo Xing entered, she saw Jiang Yi sitting beside him.

“When I came back and saw my slippers gone, I knew it was you,” Luo Xingqi said. The apartment belonged to the company and wasn’t stocked with daily necessities for Lo Xing or Jiang Yi.

The only pair of slippers was on Lo Xing’s feet, so neither husband nor wife had changed theirs.

“You must have been really tired, sleeping until dark,” Jiang Yi said, ladling a bowl of seafood soup, the pale shrimp bobbing in the broth, filling the air with a fresh, savory scent.

Lo Xing quickly lifted the bowl and took a sip.

“Wash your hands!” Jiang Yi laughed. “You’ve been spoiled!”

Luo Xingqi brought out a spicy stir-fried pork dish, joking, “That’s because you spoiled her.”

Lo Xing listened to their affectionate teasing as she obediently went to the kitchen to wash her hands.

“Xingxing, why do you look so unhappy?” Jiang Yi had eaten half her bowl. Her flight landed at seven, and it was nearly eight when she arrived at Luo’s place.

Luo Xingqi had also worked late, so the two of them only ate close to nine. Hungry, they hadn’t paid much attention until they noticed Lo Xing’s distracted expression, barely picking up her chopsticks to eat a few grains of rice.

“What’s wrong? Talk to Dad. Didn’t you just win that prestigious international gold award? That’s amazing.”

Luo Xingqi stood to serve Jiang Yi a bowl of soup. “For my wife.”

Jiang Yi gave a thumbs up. “Thanks, honey, you’re so thoughtful.”

Luo Xingqi refilled Lo Xing’s emptied bowl generously, nearly scooping all the shrimp from the pot, placing it beside her. “Drink more.”

“Thank you, Dad,” Lo Xing said, biting her spoon.

“Don’t pressure yourself. You still have Mom and Dad. You’ve already done so well!” Jiang Yi encouraged.

Luo Xingqi nodded. “Yeah, I thought you wouldn’t get into college and was even ready to open a shop for you, put your name on it, hire a few people, and let you just relax at home while earning money. Who would have thought my daughter would be so outstanding!”

Lo Xing was speechless.

Jiang Yi gave Luo Xingqi a playful glare. “Xingxing, what’s wrong? Did you have a heartbreak?”

“Ah? How did you know?” Lo Xing hadn’t told them about Gu Shiyan.

Luo Xingqi sighed beside her. “Your brother figured it out. We didn’t mention it because we didn’t want you to overthink, but you know your limits.”

“His name is Gu Shiyan?” Jiang Yi asked again.

“Ah? That too?” Lo Xing was stunned.

Luo Xingqi coughed. “Don’t blame your mother and me for invading your privacy. Your brother sneaked into your school group pretending to be a freshman...”
