[The Aftermath of the Xiaoning Incident]
Midnight.
The world was utterly silent.
Yet the precinct was still brightly lit.
The identities of the dead had been confirmed. They were two KTV attendants who had been missing for half a year. Since both were migrant workers, the KTV owner had assumed they had returned to their hometowns and had thought nothing of it.
When he was told that the two were dead, the owner was so frightened that he could barely speak coherently.
Because the two victims had led simple lives and had limited social circles, the police had yet to identify any suspects.
The captain stood outside the restroom, his face unusually stern.
A cold wind blew in through the window, carrying with it the stench from inside the restroom and making him frown deeply.
A cigarette was pinched between his fingers. When the sensor light overhead went out, its red ember flickered in and out of sight, accentuating the hard lines of his face.
“Tap, tap, tap.”
The footsteps triggered the sensor lights in the corridor.
Huadian suddenly spotted the man standing by the restroom and was startled from head to toe.
The captain’s gaze shifted slightly toward her. Huadian instinctively lowered her head to avoid his eyes, then darted into the women’s restroom.
The captain’s thick brows drew together, but he said nothing.
Huadian lingered inside the women’s restroom for a long time. Only after she was certain the captain had left did she creep out cautiously, like a thief.
“Were you looking for me?”
The sudden, cold voice made Huadian’s entire body jolt. Her voice trembled. “C-Captain…”
The captain’s gaze was razor-sharp, as though it could see straight through her.
Huadian kept warning herself to remain calm, but the trembling of her legs had already betrayed her.
Huadian had always been somewhat afraid of him, but the terror on her face now was clearly the terror of someone with a guilty conscience.
Thinking of Qin Yu’s words, his expression darkened.
“Huadian.”
“I didn’t kill anyone!”
Perhaps the psychological pressure had become too much. The instant the captain called her name, Huadian reacted violently and blurted out her denial.
The captain’s eyes grew complicated. After a very long silence, he slowly said, “Huadian, you were the student I had the highest hopes for.”
Huadian lowered her head, and two lines of tears slid down her cheeks. “I’m sorry, Mentor. I’m sorry…”
The captain looked at her with regret. His eyes held far too much emotion.

Unable to bear it any longer, Huadian broke down and sobbed.
She was wrong. She truly knew she was wrong.
From the moment she struck, she had regretted it. But at the time, it had felt as though she were being controlled…
—
Inside the taxi.
The driver in the front seat kept glancing back at Qin Yu, making her uncomfortable.
Whenever she looked up, the driver would quickly turn his head away and pretend to be concentrating on driving.
Qin Yu stared fixedly at him until he tried to sneak another look. Their eyes met.
The driver was a middle-aged man in his fifties with a beer belly and a barrel-shaped waist. He was not particularly tall. Caught in the act by Qin Yu, he gave an awkward smile.
“Little miss, why do you keep staring at me?”
Qin Yu’s voice was cool. “If you weren’t looking at me, how would you know I was looking at you?”
The driver was momentarily speechless, but he maintained his broad grin in an attempt to smooth things over.
“Young lady, why are you acting as if you’ve swallowed gunpowder? Uncle only looked because you’re pretty. I just took a liking to you.”
“??? Is there something wrong with this driver?”
“Wife, why don’t you get out of the car? I have a bad feeling about this driver. Girls need to protect themselves when they’re out alone.”
“Did the person above forget the scene where this woman slapped a ghost with her bare hand? I think the one who should be crying is the driver.”
“Why are you people thinking so badly of him? Maybe he’s simply a warm and friendly person. Besides, doesn’t everyone like beautiful women?”
“[Vomit] This isn’t about whether he likes beautiful women. It’s the way this driver is talking. He sounds so lecherous!”
“I agree! His tone makes me sick.”
“Are you women just being too sensitive? I think he sounds perfectly normal.”
Qin Yu gave him a polite smile. Turning her head, she smiled sweetly.
“Uncle, that gold chain around your neck is quite nice. Can I take it?”
“Hahahaha, that’s my wife! Hahahaha!”
“Sure enough, the only thing that can defeat magic is magic itself.”
“I’ve learned something! Next time someone harasses me, I’ll say the same thing! That’s so damn cool!”
The driver was not offended by Qin Yu’s words. Instead, he grinned even more broadly.
“You want this gold chain? How about this? Come home with Uncle, and I’ll give it to you.”
As he spoke, he reached up and jangled the gold chain around his neck.
Qin Yu remained perfectly calm. With a sweet smile, she turned her phone screen around, exposing his face to everyone watching.
“Uncle, let me show my friends in the livestream what kind of man would say something like that.”
“[Vomit][Vomit][Vomit] This is disgusting! My wife could be his daughter, and he still has thoughts like that!”
“What about all those men who said there was nothing wrong? Want to take a look at how disgusting this driver is?”
“I’ve already reported him. This constitutes harassment!”

The driver had thought Qin Yu was acting strange from the moment she got into the car, which was why he had kept glancing at her.
He had quietly observed her, and when she remained silent for a long time, he assumed she had finished her phone call. That was why he had dared to speak so recklessly.
But how could he have known that Qin Yu had not been on a call at all? She had been livestreaming.
His face changed like paint on an artist’s palette, shifting through every color imaginable.
He forced himself to keep smiling. “Young lady, why are you taking this so seriously? Uncle was only joking with you. You young people are so unable to take a joke these days.”
“Uncle, you can save that explanation for the police.”
Qin Yu smiled sweetly.
The driver was about to beg for mercy when Qin Yu simply closed her eyes and leaned back in her seat, resting with her eyes shut.
A murderous glint gradually appeared in his eyes.
In the back seat, the corners of Qin Yu’s lips curled slightly upward.
A faint fragrance began to drift through the car.
—
With a loud screech, the vehicle came to a stop by a deserted roadside.
The violent jolt woke Qin Yu.
She opened her eyes and looked out the window in alarm. “Where are we? This isn’t where I was supposed to get out!”
The driver let out a low chuckle, a sinister smile spreading across his face.
“This is where you’ll be buried.”
His features twisted viciously as he reached back from the driver’s seat to drag her toward him.
But Qin Yu was nimble, and he failed to grab her on the first attempt.
Qin Yu hurriedly searched for her phone.
The driver, however, did not seem worried in the slightest.
“That thing is useless! I’ve got a signal jammer in the car!”
Qin Yu suddenly calmed down. She stared coldly at the driver.
For a brief moment, he felt a chill run down his spine. But in the next instant, he saw Qin Yu trembling as she shrank into the corner.
He rubbed his eyes, deciding he must have imagined it.
“You’re equipped with everything. You must be a repeat offender, right?”
