Volume One, Chapter Four: The Mechanical Age Dawns

“No, it’s not time yet. I can’t make a move,” Zhang Wei kept telling himself silently.

If there was even the slightest chance of changing his future, he wasn’t willing to take the risk.

Sacrificing his future just for those two scoundrels wasn’t worth it.

As Zhang Wei struggled to suppress his anger, Han Xu, oblivious to Zhang Wei’s unease, casually got off the car and threw his arm around Zhang Wei’s neck.

What Han Xu didn’t realize was that when he grabbed Zhang Wei’s neck, Zhang Wei’s whole body trembled slightly, his fists clenched tightly.

He almost lost control and wanted to punch the face so close to him.

“So, what do you think, buddy? I brought my sister along. Let’s see how you perform later,” Han Xu whispered softly into Zhang Wei’s ear.

Zhang Wei seemed very agitated. In Han Xu’s eyes, Zhang Wei took several deep breaths, trying hard to calm down.

Then, a rather awkward smile spread across Zhang Wei’s face.

“Hello, Han Xiao,” he gritted out the words, his voice slightly distorted.

“Pfft, Zhang Wei, why are you so nervous?” Han Xiao couldn’t help but chuckle lightly. They had met before, and back then, Zhang Wei had never looked this tense around her.

Still, Han Xiao had a soft spot for this naive young man, especially one with a bit of money.

At least until she spent all of his money, her fondness wouldn’t fade.

“Look at you, such a coward,” Han Xu nudged Zhang Wei’s back with his arm.

Not forcefully, but it almost reignited the fire Zhang Wei had painstakingly suppressed.

“What do you want from me?”

“Didn’t I just say? I brought my sister to see you.”

“I still have things to do. Look!” Zhang Wei pointed behind him.

Only then did Han Xu look to see what Zhang Wei was doing, and his brow immediately furrowed.

Han Xiao let out a startled cry, her face draining of color.

“Wei Zi, since when did you develop this kind of hobby?” Han Xu, though not afraid of rats, felt uneasy looking at the mouse caught in the trap.

And what was with the huge iron chain on the rat?

“It’s useful.”

“Well, dude, this bike was bought on a loan, and I still owe some money. See…”

“No worries, I’ll cover the cost. But not now. In a few days when I come back from the mountains, I’ll come find you. By the way, your sister’s not leaving, right?” Zhang Wei glanced at the pale-faced Han Xiao.

Seeing her like this, Zhang Wei felt a faint thrill of revenge welling up inside him.

“My sister won’t be leaving anytime soon. So, it’s settled. When you return to the city, come find me.”

Han Xu didn’t want to linger any longer; he was itching to leave.

“Don’t worry, I’ll definitely come find you.” This time, Zhang Wei’s smile was much more natural.

“Good, I’ll wait for you.” Han Xu patted Zhang Wei’s shoulder and without another word, hurried off with Han Xiao.

The roar of their motorcycle gradually faded into the distance.

Zhang Wei silently watched their retreating figures. “I’ll let you live a few more days. Maybe it’s not so bad letting you experience the apocalypse.”
