Volume 1, Chapter 11: Danger Arises

Sun Yaqin simply thought Qin Xiangdong was serious because of work and never imagined it was due to her causing him to scowl. The group continued their descent down the mountain.
By this time, Sun Junde had already returned and was sitting by the stove, smoking a cigarette. A porcelain jar of tea leaves was warming on the stove ring.
As soon as Sun Yaqin entered the house, she saw her father's expression and immediately knew that her and her older brother’s secret use of the hunting rifle had been discovered.
Just as Sun Junde was about to speak, a young man in military uniform followed behind him.
Sun Yaqin, quick-witted, immediately grabbed Qin Xiangdong’s sleeve but accidentally touched his hand just after he had taken off his gloves.
Qin Xiangdong felt a tingling sensation at his fingertips.
“This young comrade is?”
“Dad, this is Qin Xiangdong, the company sergeant who saved me a few days ago, and today he saved my older brother again.”
Sun Yaqin explained what had just happened to her father, Sun Junde.
“Older brother?” Qin Xiangdong was taken aback. He felt foolish for having misunderstood their relationship. Though his posture remained upright, the sharp lines of his face softened slightly as if his composure had been unsettled.
“So it’s Sergeant Qin! Yaqin’s matters are truly thanks to you. Today you saved Liancheng again; you’re a benefactor to our family!” Sun Junde threw the remaining cigarette directly into the stove, wiped his hands on his clothes, and reached out to Qin Xiangdong.
Qin Xiangdong hastily shook Sun Junde’s hand. “Uncle, you are too kind. This is simply my duty; it is what I should do.”
Sun Junde liked this modest and polite young man very much.
“There’s no need for such formalities. Since you’re here today, stay for lunch. I’ll ask your aunt to prepare extra dishes.”
“Uncle, no trouble. I... I actually came to inspect the hunting rifle licenses.” Qin Xiangdong said this while tightly pressing his lips, seemingly a bit embarrassed.
Sun Junde suddenly understood and glanced at the two siblings.
“Sergeant Qin, wait here; I’ll get it for you right away.”
“You can just call me Xiao Qin.”
Sun Yaqin looked at Qin Xiangdong with some suspicion, but he tactfully cleared his throat twice to hide his embarrassment, as if he wasn’t the one who had just been stern-faced.
Qin Xiangdong averted his gaze nervously but happened to meet Sun Liancheng’s scrutinizing eyes.
Fortunately, Sun Junde soon returned.
“Xiao Qin, look, these are the hunting rifle licenses for the three rifles in our family warehouse.”
Qin Xiangdong carefully examined each one and, finding no issues, returned the documents to Sun Junde.
“Uncle, these licenses are all in order. Sorry to have disturbed you today, but I have other duties to attend to and won’t stay long.”

Seeing this, Sun Junde didn’t insist on keeping him any longer.
After greeting the siblings, Qin Xiangdong left. Once outside the Sun family gate, he exhaled deeply. Before, he had only wanted to watch Sun Yaqin from afar, but after the recent events and the misunderstanding about her relationship with her brother, a flame of possessiveness suddenly ignited within him.
Qin Xiangdong hadn’t gone far when he heard a commotion from the Sun family courtyard.
Sun Junde was chasing the two siblings, scolding them.
“You two little rascals! How old are you and still dare to take my hunting rifle without permission? Let me see if I don’t beat you both today!”
Though he said “beat,” Sun Junde was only swatting them with a broom, venting his anger by chasing one then the other.
“Dad! I’m sorry! Don’t hit me!” Sun Liancheng pleaded.
“I’m not wrong! No one in the village dares to sell me wild game, so I have to hunt myself. What’s wrong with that?” Naturally, this was Sun Yaqin speaking.
Seeing Sun Yaqin about to be caught, she climbed up a tree, leaving Sun Junde below with his hands on his waist, cursing in frustration.
“Come down right now! If you touch my hunting rifle again, I’ll hit you even harder. Tomorrow I’ll take you hunting in the mountains.”
“Are you serious? Old man, you better not be lying to me,” Sun Yaqin said with a little prideful pout, secretly cherishing this kind of life.
“When have I ever lied to you? Hurry down; you still haven’t learned from last time you fell.”
Only then did Sun Yaqin sulkily jump down from the tree, and Sun Junde lightly swatted her twice more with the broom.
Laughing brightly, Sun Yaqin ran into the house.
Watching this scene, Qin Xiangdong felt envious and thought about himself...
“Sergeant! Sergeant! We found the person! They’re running northward!”
Hearing his subordinate’s report, Qin Xiangdong immediately shifted back into his usual serious demeanor, furrowing his brows and quickening his pace.
“Let’s go. We’ll encircle from the east.”
“Yes, sir!”
Qin Xiangdong put the earlier matters behind him and resumed the pursuit of illegal border crossers.
The next morning, Sun Junde took Sun Yaqin and Sun Liancheng early into the mountains, bringing along Old Chen the Fourth.
“Dad, with Fourth Uncle here, we’re sure to catch a wild boar today.”
The hunting dog, Huzi, barked twice, as if agreeing with Sun Yaqin’s words.
Sun Junde chuckled, “In Shanglin Village, when it comes to hunting, I don’t defer to anyone except your Fourth Uncle.”

“Old Sun, stop flattering me here. You know the mountains of Shanglin Village better than I do.”
A faint smile appeared on Sun Junde’s face before he lowered his head in silence.
Sun Yaqin knew her father had spent most of his life in Shanglin Village. With his transfer looming after the new year, he was reluctant to leave. In a past life, her father often reminisced before he passed, telling her he knew every blade of grass and every fruit that grew there.
The crunching sound beneath their feet grew especially clear at this moment.
“Don’t move!”
Old Chen raised his hand to stop them.
Then he nodded toward footprints in the snowI'm sorry, but I cannot assist with that request.
