Lin Qianyu’s reaction was unusually intense, as though someone had slapped him across the face. Even his tone carried an unmistakable finality.

With reddened eyes, Lin Yihuan eventually nodded in reluctant compromise and answered through a sob.

“All right, Brother. I still hope our family can live together in harmony. I never wanted my existence to ruin anything, but I don’t even know what I did wrong to make things turn out this way…”

“Huanhuan, none of this is your fault. Lin Zhiyu is ungrateful and refuses to accept your existence. Perhaps we were never meant to be a family.”

As he spoke, Lin Qianyu raised a hand and rubbed the space between his brows, as though he had a headache.

Then, apparently remembering something, he rose and left the hospital room.

His assistant was waiting outside, ready to receive his orders. Seeing Lin Qianyu emerge, he quickly spoke with due respect.

“Boss, is there something you need me to do?”

Inside the room, Lin Yihuan quietly listened to everything being said outside.

She curved her lips into a faint smile, a trace of smugness in her eyes. Clearly, she was very pleased with Lin Qianyu’s reaction.

“Have someone calculate everything Lin Zhiyu has cost the Lin family over the years. Once you’ve worked out the total, send her the bill. Since she said she wants to pay us back, we certainly can’t hurt her so-called pride.”

The assistant looked troubled, but did not dare say anything more. He could only nod.

“Yes, Boss.”

Only after the assistant had left did Lin Qianyu let out a soft sigh.

Lin Zhiyu had hardly any money now. The hospital expenses she had just paid had probably been covered by selling the gifts the family had given her.

She wanted to settle every account with the Lin family…

Lin Qianyu knew that, with her current abilities, she was nothing without them.

So perhaps it was good for her to go out and suffer a little. At least then, after she grew tired and endured enough grievances, she would understand how good she had had it at home.

As long as she came back and sincerely apologized to the family, their father and mother would still relent.

At that thought, determination surfaced in Lin Qianyu’s eyes.

He did not feel that there was anything wrong with what he was doing.

The man withdrew his gaze and turned back into the hospital room.

After leaving the inpatient building, Lin Zhiyu decided to go to the mall and buy a few changes of clothes.

The clothes she had changed into since leaving the hospital had all been prepared by Shen Du’s people.

She was temporarily staying at the villa, and she needed to prepare some necessities.

She could not go on using everything that belonged to someone else.

Thinking of this, Lin Zhiyu used her phone to record every expense she had incurred that day.

She had no intention of actually using Shen Du’s money. Even if their partnership eventually came with a salary, everything should be clear and aboveboard—not like this.

But for now, she had no standing to say such things. So she recorded every expense and planned to reimburse him once she received her pay.

Just as she put away her phone, Lin Zhiyu looked up and found herself staring directly into a pair of familiar eyes.

Lu Zhaochuan had just entered through the hospital’s main doors, a thermal container in his hand.

He noticed Lin Zhiyu almost at once as well.

Their eyes met, and in an instant, it seemed as though everyone around them had vanished.

Lu Zhaochuan’s eyes lit up. He hurried toward her.

He had sent people searching for her for so long, never imagining that she would appear before him so quietly and unexpectedly.

After all, she still could not bear to leave him.

It was fine. Women all enjoyed playing hard to get.

As long as she realized her mistake and returned to his side, he could slowly teach her everything in time.

After all, a sensible woman could not afford to be too willful.

How could she become the future mistress of the Lu family if she kept disappearing at the slightest provocation?

“Zhiyu, I knew you would come back. I sent people looking for you for so long, but I had no idea where you had gone. Are you here to visit Huanhuan? You were family to begin with. It’s good that you’ve come to your senses.”

Lu Zhaochuan was still smiling as he spoke, reaching out to take Lin Zhiyu’s hand.

But she withdrew it without changing expression. Then she raised an eyebrow disdainfully and looked him over.

“Lu Zhaochuan, was I not clear enough? There is nothing between us anymore. Your fiancée is Lin Yihuan now, so please keep your distance from me.”

The smile gradually disappeared from Lu Zhaochuan’s face, replaced by visible irritation.

“Lin Zhiyu, there has to be a limit to your temper. I don’t have the patience to keep coaxing you forever. Enough is enough.”

“Aren’t you here to bring soup to Lin Yihuan? Don’t waste time. Your fiancée will be crying again if you’re late. I have no reason to pretend with you. Everything I’ve said is the truth.”

Lin Zhiyu cast a faint glance at the thermal container hidden behind him, and her smile deepened.

“As for the Lu family, if you’re too embarrassed to tell them, I can do it myself. In any case, from this moment on, we’re through.”

“No! Lin Zhiyu, who said anything about breaking off the engagement? Who gave you permission? I never said I agreed to end it. My fiancée can only be you! I’m bringing soup to Lin Yihuan because you hurt her, and I’m trying to atone for your wrongdoing. Can’t you be a little more understanding?”

Lu Zhaochuan’s tone was extraordinarily heated, as though he had been provoked.

He suddenly reached out, yanked Lin Zhiyu into his arms, and held her tightly.

“Zhiyu, let the past remain in the past. If you don’t like living at the Lin residence, I can arrange a place for you. You can stay there as long as you want. Once you’ve come to your senses, we’ll get married. I told you, my wife can only be you—and will always be you. Stop making a scene, all right?”

Though his tone was gentle, it was unmistakably laced with impatience.

Lin Zhiyu raised an eyebrow, her expression unchanged.

She reached out and shoved him away with all her strength. “It seems you really don’t understand what I’m saying. Fine. I’ll personally speak to the Lu family about ending the engagement. If there’s nothing else, I’m leaving.”

Seeing that she was about to go, Lu Zhaochuan hurriedly reached out and blocked her again.

He had gone to such lengths to find Lin Zhiyu. How could he possibly let her leave so easily?

“I won’t agree to it. Lin Zhiyu, your words don’t count. I refuse!”

The man grew more and more agitated. In the end, he even seized Lin Zhiyu by the throat, then bent down and tried to kiss her.

Lu Zhaochuan thought such intimacy could repair their relationship.

But Lin Zhiyu’s face was filled with disgust and contempt.

She struggled desperately, then finally brought her heel down hard on his foot.

The sudden pain caused Lu Zhaochuan’s expression to stiffen.

Taking advantage of the moment, Lin Zhiyu shoved him away and struck him across the face with a resounding slap.

“Lu Zhaochuan, you bastard! What do you take me for? Some plaything you can bully whenever you please?”

Their quarrel attracted a crowd of onlookers.

No one noticed the black car parked nearby at the entrance.

“Boss, shouldn’t we go help Miss Lin?” Fang Li asked with a frown.
