Chapter Two: Bai Yue Breaks Off the Engagement with Long Xingyu
If Long Xingyu had even a trace of affection for me, he would never have been the one to send me to the stake.
As she prepared to see Long Xingyu again, Bai Yue’s heart was anything but calm. She fiercely concealed the anger and hatred flickering in her eyes, fearing that the sight of his face would drive her to the brink of killing this faithless man.
“Ah Yue?” Long Xingyu pushed open the door, his tone laced with accusation. “The auspicious hour is nearly upon us. Why haven’t you finished getting ready? And why did you send away the person who was helping you dress?”
Bai Yue rose from her chair at the vanity, turning sharply to cast the white veil from her head directly into Long Xingyu’s face.
Her expression was icy and detached as she spoke, “Because I no longer wish to marry you. I, Bai Yue, hereby call off our engagement.”
“Bai Yue, do you even know what you’re saying?” Long Xingyu stepped forward and seized her arm, his brow furrowed as he struggled to suppress the fury beneath his calm exterior.
Her arm, as pale and flawless as jade, soon showed bruises—evidence of his strength.
Bai Yue let out a bitter laugh. So it was true: Long Xingyu’s ingrained chauvinism had always been there, only obscured by the blindness of love. She had never truly seen his nature.
“Let go of me, Long Xingyu. You’re hurting me,” she frowned.
But instead of loosening his grip, he tightened it further.
“Bai Yue, what do you think I am? You can’t just break off our engagement on a whim. If you didn’t like me, you shouldn’t have provoked me in the first place!”
“Now that you’ve entangled yourself with me, you’ll never escape me in this lifetime!”
His voice was calm, devoid of hysteria or rage, yet his words sent a chill through Bai Yue’s entire being, filling her with dread.
She regretted her rash demand to end the engagement.
Even after more than twenty years, she still harbored illusions about the Long Xingyu of two decades past, foolishly believing that their passionate love could blossom into something real.
But hard force would not work; she had to try a softer approach. Besides, according to how things had unfolded in her previous life, the marriage would never reach the altar. Before the wedding, when the demon horde launched their massive assault on Zhen Nan Pass, Long Xingyu had to go out to battle, and by the time he returned, she would have already been taken away by her father, the emperor.
“Xingyu, I don’t want to call off the engagement either, but if you marry me, it will ruin your career. You are a promising Divine Seal Knight and the Grandmaster of the Knight’s Sanctuary. I am but an orphaned girl, fatherless and motherless, unable to cultivate.”
“Most importantly, I am a mixed-blood of demon and human, born unable to cultivate. The priests of the High Sanctuary all say that any child I bear is likely to inherit my condition—incapable of cultivation or possessing innate spiritual power no greater than ten.” Bai Yue’s eyes brimmed with tears, her expression one of helpless resignation.
Long Xingyu looked at her and took a handkerchief from his waist, gently wiping away the tears at the corner of her eyes.
“Ah Yue, you don’t have to worry about any of that. You are my wife, and I will marry you. No one can stop me.” His voice was filled with deep affection.
Suppressing her revulsion, Bai Yue forced a smile and leaned tenderly against Long Xingyu’s shoulder. “Brother Long, I just feel like I’m not good enough for you. That’s what everyone says.”
Long Xingyu laughed heartily and embraced her indulgently. “Ah Yue, don’t be insecure. Trust me, I will protect you forever and never let you be hurt.”
A man’s words are a liar’s promise. In her past life, it was this very man who had sent her to the stake, watching her burn alive with his own hands.
Bai Yue’s heart sank with frustration. Why had the battle drums of the demon horde not sounded yet?
She could no longer continue this charade with Long Xingyu; if she stayed any longer, she would truly be sickened.
Thump, thump, thump—
Thump, thump, thump—
Thump, thump, thump—
Nine war drums sounded in rapid succession, making Long Xingyu’s powerful frame shudder. He realized these were the drums signaling the arrival of formidable enemies at Zhen Nan Pass.
Nine drumbeats—the highest alert. Whatever came now was no ordinary demon but likely one of the top ten Demon Gods.
Sensing the urgency, Long Xingyu quickly made arrangements and instructed Bai Yue, “Ah Yue, wait for me at home. Strong enemies are advancing, and Zhen Nan Pass is in danger. I must go to the frontlines. When I return, we will hold our wedding ceremony.”
After leaving, he reflected on Bai Yue’s unusual behavior today and felt uneasy. To be safe, he assigned one of his trusted Seventh-Rank Silver Base Knights to secretly guard her—not only to protect her but also to ensure she wouldn’t slip away and escape the wedding.
Once Long Xingyu departed, Bai Yue exhaled deeply, clutching her chest to steady her emotions.
She had truly been blinded by love before, never perceiving Long Xingyu’s flaws, mistakenly believing he was a man worthy of a lifetime.
After a long wait, a figure finally appeared before her.
A young man in a purple robe embroidered with golden patterns that fluttered as if moved by an unseen wind, his handsome face faintly furrowed in concern as he looked at Bai Yue.
Feng Xiu sensed the bloodline flowing within this girl—his own blood. Yet, aside from Bai Lingxuan, he had no romantic entanglements with any other human. Therefore, this must be the daughter born of Lingxuan and himself.
Feng Xiu was certain of this. He opened his mouth but closed it again, wary that any sudden words might startle the child.
“I am your father…” After a long hesitation, Feng Xiu finally spoke.
“Child, I know you resent me. But can you give me a chance to make up for the grievances you have suffered all these years?”
Tears blurred Bai Yue’s eyes as she looked at her father, sobbing uncontrollably.
Feng Xiu awkwardly stepped forward, producing a handkerchief to wipe away her tears.
“Yue’er, don’t cry…”
Noticing how flustered Feng Xiu was from her tears, Bai Yue smiled through her sobs and embraced him tightly.
“Father, you are alive—that’s wonderful!”
Feng Xiu, having risen to the rank of Demon God Emperor within the fiercely competitive Heaven-Defying Demon Dragon Clan, was astute and perceptive. Bai Yue’s words carried a weight of hidden meaning.
“Yue’er, what do you mean by that?”
Bai Yue had no intention of hiding the truth, but here, within the territory of the Sanctuary Alliance, walls had ears. This was not the place to reveal her reincarnation.
“Father, I will explain everything to you later. This is not a place to stay. Long Xingyu could return at any moment. Let’s leave now—I don’t want to have any more dealings with that scoundrel.” Bai Yue spoke softly.
She took Feng Xiu’s arm and gently shook it in a natural, intimate gesture of affection. Seeing this, a faint smile curved the usually expressionless face of Feng Xiu.
My daughter is finally acting like a little darling! Indeed, a daughter is far more thoughtful than a bratty son.
Thinking of the young Abao in the Demon God Palace, Feng Xiu silently acknowledged: Yue’er is truly better. That brat only knows how to make me angry.
The discovery of Bai Yue filled Feng Xiu with surprise and joy. He had never imagined that Bai Lingxuan bore him a daughter.
Although the Demon God Palace already had Abao and another concubine soon to give birth, Bai Yue’s significance to Feng Xiu was entirely different—she was the cherished fruit of his true love.
