Chapter 24: The Resolve of a Wage Earner
Star Sea Corporation, top floor, CEO's office.
After receiving the data, Peng Jiaxin instructed her assistant to make the necessary purchases.
"I don't have any specific requirements for the brand, as long as it doesn't interfere with my daily office work."
"Understood, President."
Once the assistant left, Peng Jiaxin looked at her phone.
Zhou Xuejing hadn't just sent Chen Fan's ring size; she had followed it with a long paragraph of praise for him, leaving Peng completely bewildered.
"What on earth did Chen Fan say to her?"
Only last night, Zhou Xuejing had warned her not to trust a man she had only known for two days too easily. How had she defected so quickly?
Reading between the lines, it seemed like the woman was eager to package her up and deliver her to his bed right then and there.
"By the way, I still have to make a trip to the capital."
"Hm? You haven't given up yet?"
"No, it's just that if you're going to act, you have to play the whole part."
Zhou Xuejing explained to Peng how she had obtained Chen Fan's ring size.
"Don't worry, I'll be back soon. I'm just going to say my goodbyes."
Over the past few days, Zhou had come to terms with it. As a lady of the Zhou family—a wealthy heiress who could spend her entire life without ever working a day—why on earth would she insist on hanging herself from a single tree?
Chen Fan had essentially moved an entire forest in front of her; she would be a fool not to give up.
"Fine, just make use of Chen Fan if you need anything. He has energy to spare."
"Then I won't stand on ceremony."
Zhou Xuejing had arrived empty-handed, and naturally, she left the same way. She booked her flight, went downstairs, and asked Chen Fan to give her a ride.
"Give you a ride? How?"
Zhou Xuejing opened the cabinet above the shoe rack, where a row of car keys hung neatly.
"Take your pick."
"..."
...
With the departure of Chen Fan and Zhou Xuejing, the house was completely empty.
Xingxing slowly opened its eyes and surveyed its surroundings.
"Where am I?"
"Oh, right. The two-legged creature brought me here to move yesterday."
Peng Jiaxin, being generous, had cleared out an entire room to serve as a cat den. The room was large, but sparsely furnished with only a few trinkets Chen Fan had bought, which didn't even fill a corner. The items Peng had ordered hadn't arrived yet.
Xingxing stood up and patrolled its new territory.
Hmm... not bad, quite spirited!
It was a bit empty, but Xingxing believed that the two-legged creature would provide offerings soon. By then, its "palace" would fill the entire room! It would be even better if it could get a few concubines; that would make life truly complete.
Thinking of this, Xingxing let out a satisfied "meow." It lowered its head to take a few bites of the canned cat food Aunt Xu had prepared and its eyes lit up.
Even the food tasted much better. Not bad at all; there was more and more to look forward to in this life.
...
After Chen Fan dropped Zhou Xuejing off at the airport, he realized the airport wasn't far from his in-laws' house, so he decided to pay them a visit.
Bai Meilan was very welcoming when she saw Chen Fan arrive.
Peng Guojun looked rather wilted, but he still greeted Chen Fan when he saw him.
"Mom, what's wrong with Dad?"
"He talked with your father-in-law until the early hours of the morning."
Bai Meilan paused before adding, "Just about fishing."
Her tone was filled with helplessness.
"Uh... I suppose that’s just a man's hobby."
"See, Little Fan understands me! Little Fan, what time is your father-in-law's flight? We should go together when—"
Before Peng Guojun could finish, Bai Meilan pinched his ear. The mother-in-law smiled at Chen Fan.
"Little Fan, why don't you head back for now? I have some family matters to deal with here."
"Alright, Mom. Take it easy, don't hurt yourself."
Peng Guojun: "..."
As he left the villa, Chen Fan sat in his car, lost in thought.
He had been too nervous yesterday to pay close attention to his in-laws, but this morning, he had suddenly noticed something different.
The rings on their fingers.
That’s right, they were legally married, so how could they not have rings?
"I should go buy one."
Chen Fan headed straight for Xinxin Plaza.
The slogan for Xinxin Mall was: "If you can think of it, you can buy it."
The high-end luxury stores on the first floor sold more than just clothes.
Diamond rings were nice, and Chen Fan could afford them, but he thought he should buy something comfortable and practical for daily wear. While browsing, he was drawn into a gold shop. He quickly took a liking to a pair of pure gold rings engraved with a few flowers. The description stated they were violets.
The language of violets is: eternal beauty and love, representing unwavering loyalty in romance.
Chen Fan asked the clerk to take out the gold rings for him to see. He tried on the man's ring, and it felt quite good.
"If the lady finds it doesn't fit or it's too big, can I come back to exchange it?"
"No problem at all, sir."
The shop assistant answered his questions very patiently.
"If it doesn't fit, you can bring your wife over, and we can adjust it on the spot."
"Alright."
Since the clerk was so accommodating, Chen Fan didn't hesitate. He paid promptly, took the bag, and left.
Back in the car, Chen Fan took out his phone, eager to see Peng Jiaxin and put the ring on her, but he feared she might refuse.
After hesitating for a long time, the message he sent instead asked her what she was planning for lunch.
"Coming home to eat."
"Let me pick you up. Shall we go out for a meal?"
"Sure, I'll book a restaurant."
"Alright."
Consequently, Aunt Xu received the news again that they wouldn't be back for lunch.
Aunt Xu’s expression didn't change, as if she had expected it. She took out a few cans of cat food and went to Xingxing’s room, calling out softly, "Xingxing, time to eat~"
"Meow~"
Xingxing immediately crawled out of its little den. It recognized the two-legged creature, or more accurately, it recognized the can in Aunt Xu's hand.
"Meow~ meow~"
"Alright, I'll open it for you right away."
Xingxing nodded.
Hmm, this new servant is quite perceptive. I approve!
"Meow!"
Aunt Xu smiled and stroked Xingxing’s head.
Cooking for someone is just cooking, right, Xingxing?
"Meow~"
...
Meanwhile, Peng Jiaxin put away the diamond ring catalog the assistant had brought. Choosing a diamond ring was far more difficult than she had imagined.
Even though the assistant had already screened them once, she still felt dizzy looking at them. Her mind told her to just pick one at random, but her heart wouldn't allow it.
After struggling for a long time, she gave up.
*I'm sorry, Xuejing, I have failed your sacrifice.*
"You can get off work now."
"Thank you, President Peng."
The assistant efficiently packed up Peng Jiaxin's things into her bag and followed her into the private elevator.
"You can get off work"—the essence lay in the word "can." If the assistant had simply turned and walked away upon hearing that, she could have started packing her bags to be fired by the next morning.
An employee must have the awareness of an employee.
The boss hasn't left yet—why would you go home!
The driver was standing by at the entrance. Seeing Peng Jiaxin come down, he hurried forward to greet her.
"No need. My husband is coming to pick me up. You two can head back first."
As soon as she finished speaking, a white BMW 7 Series pulled up beside them.
Chen Fan, dressed in casual clothes, stepped out of the car.
The assistant and the driver finally saw the President's husband they had been so curious about.
How to put it?
Just looking at his face, he was certainly worthy of the President!
