Chu Xiang became even busier. He wanted to study abroad in the same city as Wu Qiyun or at least somewhere closer. So busy that he barely had time to care about the on-again, off-again relationship between Yang Yunan and Cheng Jin.

During Wu Qiyun’s summer tutoring sessions, he interned with his uncle for over a month. When he returned, it was already senior year of high school.

The pace of study in senior year was even more intense. He knew the pressure Wu Qiyun was under; she longed to break free from her original family and soar away from home. So that year, he rarely disturbed her study rhythm, only occasionally pulling her out for a breather when she was too tense.

Wu Qiyun never experienced that heart-wrenching, distracting kind of high school romance. Instead, their love felt like that of longtime companions—quiet and steady. Back at school, she was still the silent bookworm with thick glasses and the uniform on; he stayed by her side, studying together, going to and from school.

Watching Chu Xiang like this, she often thought, though he was only her age, he seemed more mature and responsible than her own father. This gave her even more confidence in their relationship.

That senior year, Yang Yunan finally got together with Cheng Jin. Their love was more like student romance—noisy and quarrelsome. Whenever they went out with friends, their presence made everything lively; sometimes they’d even bring a bowl of sunflower seeds and snack while watching the others.

The drama of two “school heartthrobs” vying for one girl was over completely. The three who might have gained great fame from it all quietly and smoothly passed through their final year without incident.

The day before the college entrance exam, Yang Yunan received a “successful studies” charm from Cheng Jin, who had gotten it at a temple. He held the charm and paced back and forth several times beside Chu Xiang’s desk, nearly shoving it into his face.

Chu Xiang laughed angrily, gritting his teeth: “Childish!”

Once class began, he poked the chair back in front of him several times, causing the student ahead to frown and turn around, eyes saying, “You better have a good reason or I’ll make sure you do!”

Chu Xiang passed a note.

“I heard that charm is really effective. Should I get one for you too? To bless you to be the top scorer.”

Wu Qiyun read the word “childish,” smiled, took the note, and continued her exercises.

Chu Xiang stared at her back: No reaction? Does she want it or not?

During break, the hallway was crowded with freshmen and sophomores moving desks to clear rooms for exam venues. Chu Xiang leaned against the railing, waiting for Wu Qiyun to come with him to the bathroom, wanting to ask if she wanted the charm—he truly cared.

He would never admit it was because Yang Yunan had provoked him.

At that moment, Cheng Jin approached.

“Senior.”

Chu Xiang straightened and nodded.

Cheng Jin hesitated, then pulled out an identical charm from her pocket with a smile: “I bought this famous exam charm from Lingyun Temple. Wishing you success in the exam.”

Chu Xiang looked at the charm Yang Yunan had flaunted repeatedly and frowned slowly.

Cheng Jin was puzzled: “Senior?”

Chu Xiang looked up at her: “Does Yang Yunan know?”

Cheng Jin didn’t understand: “Huh?”

Chu Xiang asked again: “Does Chen Qian have one?”

Cheng Jin slowly withdrew her hand, nervously looking at him—she understood his hint.

At this moment, Wu Qiyun and her friend came out of the bathroom and spotted the two standing face to face. Chu Xiang seemed to sense something and met his girlfriend’s gaze.

“Hey, what are you two standing here for?” Yang Yunan’s loud voice came from the other side.

Chu Xiang turned and smiled: “I’m asking Cheng Jin when Lingyun Temple closes. I want to get one for Qiyun.”

Wu Qiyun sighed helplessly and walked over, asking, “Are you really going to get one?”

Chu Xiang said, “Yeah. You haven’t answered me yet—do you want one?”

Wu Qiyun didn’t hesitate: “No, I’m not worried about the exam.”

Her confidence seemed to glow.

Chu Xiang looked into her eyes, shining with light as well: “Alright then, let Yang Yunan show off. We don’t care.”

Yang Yunan snorted: “Chu Xiang, sour grapes! Who just called me childish?”

Chu Xiang took Wu Qiyun’s hand and walked away, pretending not to hear.

Rounding the corner, Wu Qiyun paused, looking up at him.

Chu Xiang lowered his brows and met her gaze, declaring his loyalty first: “I didn’t do anything!”

Wu Qiyun smiled, then immediately worried about Yang Yunan.

She completely took Chu Xiang’s side, worrying about his good friend and fearing their friendship might be in jeopardy.

Chu Xiang shook her hand gently: “You focus on being the top scorer, don’t worry about all this. I’m here.”

Wu Qiyun’s smile returned, and deep inside she truly felt calm, ignoring all other distractions.

This was the first time Chu Xiang said to Wu Qiyun, “I’m here,” and later he said it many times, always shielding her from storms.

After the college entrance exam, when choosing schools and majors for studying abroad, Wu Qiyun had a huge conflict with her family.

Her parents were divorced, but both insisted she study economics and management at a prestigious university. Wu Qiyun, however, seemed to have no intention of taking over the family business and applied for a major related to biology.

The family argued so much she couldn’t stay. She was even threatened with having all her funding cut off if she disobeyed.

She hid away at Chu Xiang’s place, sitting cross-legged on his sofa.

Only then did Chu Xiang realize that even someone as decisive as Wu Qiyun could feel uncertain about her choices.

“I like studying in peace. I don’t like going into the company and dealing with those people. I’m not afraid of being poor, I don’t care about material things... but...” She looked up; her usually firm and cool eyes flickered with unease. She asked seriously, “But Chu Xiang... if I study wholeheartedly and completely leave the Wu family, will I not be worthy of you?”

Because she cared, she felt anxious and insecure.

Chu Xiang was stunned, then burst out laughing.

He cupped her upward-tilted face and gently squeezed: “You think this is a TV drama? Even if it were, I’m the one in charge at home. Who could say you’re not worthy of me?”

Wu Qiyun held his hand softly and said quietly, “I wasn’t afraid before, but now the thought of losing you makes me reluctant. I think I should let you know about my decisions for the future.”

Chu Xiang nodded, gazing into her eyes filled with tenderness, feeling as if his heart was melting: “Choose whatever you love. Everything else—I’ve got you.”

Wu family doesn’t support you, I do. Whatever obstacles the Wu family puts up, the Chu family will smooth over.

“Qiyun,” Chu Xiang slowly lowered his head, looking deep into her eyes, “do you know what I love most about you?”

Wu Qiyun’s hands clutched her knees tighter, like her throat, and after a moment she managed to say, “What?”

“I love how you overcome every difficulty and press forward bravely. I believe you’ll succeed.”

Wu Qiyun’s eyes curved into a smile as she looked up steadily at the face so near.

Chu Xiang slowly leaned in—

*Bang!* The door suddenly opened.

“Chu Xiang!” Yang Yunan’s irritable voice came through.

Chu Xiang released Wu Qiyun, gritting his teeth: “I’m taking back the keys today!”

Wu Qiyun blushed, lowered her head, quickly sat upright, and put on her slippers.

Yang Yunan entered the living room and saw the two; his heart grew even more bitter. He flopped onto the sofa: “Wu Qiyun, you’re here too...”

Chu Xiang walked over and kicked him lightly: “What’s wrong?”

Yang Yunan was half-alive: “We broke up.”

Chu Xiang responded with an “Oh.” “What happened this time?”

Yang Yunan looked at Chu Xiang, then Wu Qiyun: “Hey, class monitor, what’s so great about him? How is he better than me?”

Chu Xiang kicked him again and asked Wu Qiyun: “How am I better than you? What’s going on in your head?”

Wu Qiyun quietly asked, “Did you and Cheng Jin break up because of Chu Xiang?”

Yang Yunan’s eyes were red as he looked at Chu Xiang: “Not a fight, we broke up. I asked for it. Anyway, I’m going abroad; I don’t want to continue.”

Though he said he didn’t want to continue, his face was deeply sad.

Chu Xiang sat on the armrest beside him, holding his shoulder: “Just don’t regret it.”

Yang Yunan gripped his wrist tightly.

They looked at each other.

The tension began to rise.

The gentle Chu Xiang, for the first time, took the initiative: “Fight?”

Yang Yunan lunged and pinned Chu Xiang against the back of the sofa.

“I saw the charm she gave you before the exam. Do you all think I’m stupid?”

Chu Xiang smiled calmly: “No, I’ve always thought Cheng Jin is the stupid one.”

Yang Yunan grew angrier, grabbing his shirt tightly and raising his fist with a low roar: “What’s wrong with her liking you? How dare you call her stupid!”

Wu Qiyun ran over: “Yang Yunan, are you crazy? Fighting Chu Xiang over someone else!”

Chu Xiang kicked him in the leg, taking advantage of the pain to pin him down: “I said she’s stupid because she doesn’t know who she truly likes.”

Yang Yunan’s struggling stopped: “What do you mean?”

Wu Qiyun spoke fast and sharp: “Isn’t it obvious? She clearly likes you. Whenever she’s with you, even Chu Xiang is forgotten, but her heart still lingers with Chu Xiang. Isn’t that being greedy and foolish? You’re fighting Chu Xiang for her—aren’t you even more foolish!”

Yang Yunan loosened his grip, uncertain: “She likes me?”

Wu Qiyun sneered: “Yeah, yeah. You can go chase her now.”

Chu Xiang released him and slowly stood up: “A Nan, I won’t interfere with your relationship.”

Yang Yunan smiled bitterly, saying “Sorry.” Ignoring his wrinkled clothes, he sat up straight and covered his head: “I’ve been holding this in for over a year. I really didn’t realize she didn’t like me—that she liked you.”

Chu Xiang thought of his past life. Although he knew Cheng Jin’s feelings, he still competed with the original self and didn’t give up. In the end, he made Cheng Jin truly understand whom she loved.

Chu Xiang wanted to advise him to give up but the words stuck in his throat. He hesitated whether to say it.

Wu Qiyun, unaware of everything, was more blunt than him. Anger blazing, she no longer cared about Yang Yunan’s feelings: “You’ve been together for a year. If she doesn’t like you, why stay with you? Even if she was using you to get close to Chu Xiang, why be sad? Is a person like that worth your sadness?”

“Love between two people has nothing to do with a third party! Who you like, who she likes—it’s only your business. What good does coming to Chu Xiang do? Do you just bully him because he won’t get mad or really blame you?”

Yang Yunan lowered his head more and more. If others said this to him, he might have exploded. But Wu Qiyun was Chu Xiang’s girlfriend, his sister-in-law in his eyes. He dared not reply one word, only feeling utterly foolish—stupid, stupid to death!

Chu Xiang watched his girlfriend’s fierce spirit, almost laughing out loud. He cleared his throat to hold back a smile and looked at Yang Yunan: “A Nan, you two should cool off for a while. Qiyun’s right; Cheng Jin shouldn’t be with you for such a ridiculous reason.”

Yang Yunan looked at them with red eyes, aggrieved: “You’ll drink with me.”

Chu Xiang: “Sure.”

This time, Wu Qiyun didn’t say a word.

Yang Yunan ordered a case of beer but was drunk after a few cans, lying on the sofa, whining sadly.

Chu Xiang went over to settle him and noticed tears at the corner of his eyes.

He sent Wu Qiyun home. The earlier romantic thoughts were gone; instead, he sighed a few times unconsciously.

Wu Qiyun popped a candy into his mouth, sweet orange scent filling the air.

“Do you like orange candy?” he asked, recalling the last time.

Wu Qiyun peeled one for herself and held it in her mouth, her cheek puffed out slightly: “It’s a habit from childhood. When I’m upset, I eat one, and my mood gets much better.”

Chu Xiang felt a pang of tenderness and rubbed her head: “No more candy from now on, or you’ll get cavities.”

Wu Qiyun huffed, a little girl’s coquettish displeasure, unwilling to listen.

Chu Xiang pulled her to a stop: “If you’re upset, come find me. No candy allowed—only Chu Xiang.”

Wu Qiyun’s lips curled into a smile but she asked, “What if the reason I’m upset is you?”

Chu Xiang: “I humbly accept all my girlfriend’s criticisms. Even if we disagree, we’ll talk it through until your unhappiness is gone.”

Though sweet words, they were sincere. Wu Qiyun sucked on the sweet candy juice, nodding with smiling eyes.

Chu Xiang was touched to his core, poked her puffed cheek, and asked, “Are all your candies orange-flavored?”
